Hello, I have installed ttsynth, and the modified fedora 7 kernel, it
works fine in the console, but I now need speech with the gui, what
options do I have? Can I still use ttsynth and speakup? If so how do I
go about doing this. If not please guide to me a good solution.

You can use TTSynth with Orca in the graphical Linux desktop, however
there is currently an unresolved driver issue that requires you to kill
speech in the console in order to have speech in the graphical desktop.
You need first to install gnome-speech-ibmtts available from the Speakup
Modified repository. Thereafter, kill speech in the console with a
command like:
killall speakup-connector
You will then be able to start Orca with TTSynth. To resume speech on
the console, just rerun speakup-connector.
PS: This cumbersome situation is just one reason why we recomment
creating a symbolic link for speakup-connector that's quicker, and
easier to type.

Hello, you can also use TTSynth with Speech Dispatcher to avoid the
conflict between the GUI and speakup.

Hi, Speaking of speech-dispatcher, I now have it working under orca and
ubuntu, thanks to the recent discussion on the speechd list. Thanks, Tomas!
Now on a different note, does someone have a specific bug number for the
gentoo bug regarding dropping speakup? Also, is this a permanent drop or
will it be brought back once compatibility with later kernels is restored?
thanks,Arthur.
