This is good timing, because I am about to open a bug on gentoo,
asking our kernel maintainer to apply the source patch to the
gentoo-sources kernel so that we can build speakup on gentoo as modules
outside the kernel tree, similar to how the alsa drivers, for example,
are currently handled.

For those who are curious, the patch to apply to the kernel to get
speakup to build this way is kernel-integration-2.6.24-source.patch.

I will post an update to this list as soon as I know whether gentoo will
be able to support building speakup this way.

Thanks,

If that may help them to get decided, the Debian people have accepted
it, with exactly the same target.

Hello!
When will speakup be in the debian kernel?
Is there any timeline?

And what version?

/Kristoffer

It will not be _in_ the kernel, it will be available as modules. What
will be in the kernel, however, is the patch that permits this module
building. That will be in the 2.6.25 kernel, and hopefully we'll have
speakup in linux-modules-extra in time for Lenny's debian-installer.

Hello!
Yeah, I understand, just have talked somuch kernel things the last weeks, so
that I didn't know what I was saying.
It will be nice to have that modules. then you'll have speakup everywhere.
And then maybe I'll get rid of theproblem that speakup reads the beginning
of a line 2 times as well.

Any chance that we can get Speakup back into gentoo by default?

I'm not sure what you mean by, "by default".

Once the kernel is patched, I'll just be writing an ebuild for it so
that you can emerge speakup and get it installed. Then you would just
modprobe the module for the synth you are using. It will be very
similar to the way the alsa-driver package works if you use the drivers
that are not in the kernel.

If you mean on the live cd, not right away, because we have to get the
kernel patched, then write the ebuild, and have it tested etc., but
that is being worked on.

I got the newest 2.6.24 kernel from kernel.org, unpacked it, did cd
/usr/src/linux-2.6.24.3/drivers/arch and git clone
http://linux-speakup.org/speakup.git and it downloaded it. I then did
./install /usr/src/linux-2.6.24.3 and that worked. When I did make
menuconfig, however, it errored out and said it couldn't find kconfig in
/usr/src/linux-2.6.24/drivers/arch/speakup or something like that. This
also happened with 2.6.24.

Hi

Here's what I did:

Download kernel in my home /home/gena/
Untarred it, tar -xzf linux-2.6.24.4.tar.gz
Get speakup, git clone http://linux-speakup.org/speakup.git
Moved into kernel tree, cd linux-2.6.24.4
Then prepaired kernel, make mrproper
Moved toa root console, or you could use sudo.
As root make the symlink, ln -s /home/gena/linux-2.6.24.4 /usr/src/linux
Back to my account, cd speakup
Now patch kernel source, ./install
Then returned to kernel tree, cd ../linux-2.6.24.4
Then run, make menuconfig

All went well!

Gena
