Hi all,

Starting with the release of Fedora 7 (Moonshine), Red Hat has only
posted DVDs of the distro. For 7, we produced Cd's in addition. Now
that we're getting ready to release the Speakup Modified version of F8, I
wonder if we can drop the Cd's as Red Hat has already done. There is a
possible bug in the upstream distribution process causing me to be unable
to produce Cd's. The maintainer of Pungi, the tool we use to build
the distro has agreed to take a look at it, but I don't know what he'll be
able to do.

In addition, we're going to release an x86_64 version this time which
will a little more than double the space required to store it all on the
server which holds the images for download.

Let me know what y'all think.

Hi Bill. Dvd releases of linux seems to bhe the norm rather than the
fashion right now, so i guess it should be acceptable. Cheers!

I imagine that most people should have a DVD burner or access to one so, DVD
is the direction we should go.

I am happy to seed torrents if such exist;

whilst I only have 50 killobytes per second outbound here; I have ports well
forwarded and show up well in both any tracked swarm and on the dht network.

Regards, Kerry.

Hi, Bill!

I'm among those who don't have DVD burners. I don't know when I'll get one. If you can make a boot or rescue CD, though, I can install Fedora 8 the only way I ever installed FC6, from a DVD image in my home partition. If my hard drive's partition table gets screwed up, which has happened before, then I should be able to use GRML to set things right and then install Fedora. At least, that's my guess.

I note that a few years ago one of the much-touted benefits of Linux was that you could use it on older equipment. I take it that's one thing you can't say about Fedora or Red Hat any longer. It becomes less affordable that way. I know of course that this isn't your doing, and that you've got a problem to solve, but it deserves mention.

there will be a rescue disk for sure. As for the resource requirements of
Linux vs that other OS, I haven't seen the stats lately although everyone
seems to be saying that if you want to run Vista, it'll take more computer
than you needed with XP. That said, I might as well gripe about something
that's always bugged me about the community. We have an awful lot of
Linux dabblers. Folks who, for whatever reason, feel that they just have
to experience Linux, just to feel well-rounded, I suppose. What I find is
that they reserve their best hardware for Windows, which remains their
primary OS, and put Linux on their junk hardware. In fact, I even know
someone who has named his Linux system to match its hardware. He calls it
"junkbox".

I guess, what I'm trying to say is that I'd prefer to support those
who are serious about learning and using Linux for real. These days, I
pretty much tell folks that I don't support dual booting, or as Ann calls
it, duel booting which is really a better name for it.

I'm glad about the rescue disk.

The Linux box is the better one in this house, since I got it later. That probably will change soon, since it looks like we'll have to replace this one with that other operating system on it. I'm still a long way off from being able to use only Linux.

I think a DVD is fine, especiall as you can install from hard disk (as I
did).

It's probably good practise to keep one partition for /home all the time
anyways.

HTH.
