I downloadedThe Latest Knoppix ISO file to my hard drive. From what I
have read, Knoppix can create a bootable CD with it. Did I read
correctly?can I use speakup with this distribution? If so, can I
create a speaking disk? I have a DECTalk Express on COM1 and use Nero
6 to burn CDs.

There is a knoppix cd image up on the www.linux-speakup.org site in
the disks directory which is speakup enabled. You will have to burn
it to cdr with over burn if your burner supports it because it is an
over sized image. When booting the image you want to type at the boot
prompt:
knoppix 2 speakup_synth=dectlk
The two above is to tell knoppix you don't want it to start in 'X'
mode.

The short answer is www.slackware.com.
I think I posted the full URL to the mirror sites section 3 times in
the past 2 weeks, so go look in the archives if you for whatever
reason can't find the mirror link in slackware's site.
Greg
P.S. Any package category that doesn't have x as its first letter
is with text only software. The only exceptions are gnome and kde,
which are on the second cd.

Kirk,
I just went there and I can find nothing about knoppix.
Am I looking for the wrong thing?
I am interested in a version of Linux that can run on a CD.

I found the meeror's fine the problem is finding a meer that has a iso of
slackware
I keep finding these iso. I forget what the extention is after the iso but
its a .iso. something.
I can't seem to locate the actual just plain iso's but I did find the meer's
okay.
I should have said that in my post.
thanks

I said it was off the main speakup page not the main index page so you
would go to speakup then to disks then click on the KNOPPIX link. To
make it simple:
http://www.linux-speakup.org/ftp/disks/KNOPPIX_v3.2-2003-07-26-EN-speakup.iso
If you can't find that go back to bed.

Ah yes, I keep forgetting that not all the mirrors have the isos. So,
for the second time this week:
ftp://mirror.pudas.net/slackware/slackware-9.1-iso/
and, I'm sure Alex will add his mirror contribution once again when he
sees this thread.
Hey Kirk, how about telling people on the main speakup page where they
can get slackware isos, since it doesn't look like they'll become
available on all slackware mirrors anytime soon, and since people are
obviously not bothering to look in the list archives before they post?

Hi Kirk,
Thanks for the direct link.
BTW, there is no link on the speakup site called disks.
I don't think I am on the index page, as the page I go to is:

It is right where Kirk said it was. First if you are using Lynx click
on item 1 then after that loads click on item 9 then I think it is item
3. Very easy to find.

I have followed every link on the page and searched the pages for the word
knoppix, with nothing being found.

Hi Hank,
I'm the one who recently asked about the slackware .iso images.
I ended up getting them from the link that Alex provided.
It looks like your IE isn't allowing you to access the ftp site.
Make sure that you don't have anything like http:// or www before the
ftp://.
Better yet, use an ftp client to grab the images instead.

Glen,
When you access the www.linux-speakup.org site, you are on the
index page. The link you are looking for is not on that page. The
first link on that page is called "speakup" and if you press
enter on that, you will then go to the speakup page instead of
the index page. You should find your link there.
If you visit a web site without specifying a directory on that
site, you are actually accessing a file called index.html or
index.htm on the site. Anything else you have to ask for
explicitly.

My system is not really set to boot from the CD ROM and I do not have
reliable sighted assistance to access the BIOS.Can I make a bootable
floppy to make my Windows XP Home PC have the Floppy access the CD
ROM? If so, How?
When I burned the CD with Nero 6, the bar got to 97% and then said the
burn failed. However, all files seem to be there and the CD works
fine.

You might have access to your CD-ROM drive by holding down one of the F
keys.
I found that on mine, it is F8.
I heard someone once say F12, so it may vary on your machine.
When you do this, you have a choice of what to boot from, such as:
1 3.5 inch floppy disk
2 Volume name - hard drive
3 CD Rom drive
Glenn.

Thank you Glenn Ervin at Home. After trying a number of combinations ,
I could not figure out how to boot from the CD ROM. I then tried
putting the CD into my DVD ROM and I then got a talking boot prompt. I
think I typed in "knopix 2 speakup _synth=dectlk" and pressed enter.
the disk ran for a bit and I heard nothing. I could see that their was
something on the screen and no speaking. So I rebooted after removing
the disk. I then Fired up Nero 6, did a full format of my 4X CD-RW on
my NEC CD-RW NR9100A and did a disk Info. I was told their was 656MB
free on the disk. I then tried reburning the
KNOPPIX_v3-2-2003-07-26-EN-speakup.iso" to disk (using the CD-RW in
the NEC CD-RW NR9100A at 4X). I was asked if I wanted to use over
burn, I said yes and at 97% I got the message that burning failed. I
then checked properties and was told their was 716MB on the disk and
the disk had a total capacity of 712MB. Am I doing things right? Do I
need a different disk? I live on the west coast of Canada.

I am getting truely horrible connect times when downloading the fedora core
disks. Can I download just the first disk from linux-speakup so that the
setup program will speak and run, and then get disks 2 3 and four from
fedora site itself, or is the modified install so specialized that that
wouldn't work

Don't get 'em from different sites! It'll ballox up your installation even if they're slightly different versions! I went through that little patch of hell and wasted more
CD's than I'm happy thinking about doing that!

This question is answered in the Installation HOWTO. Briefly, you cannot
mix versions.
OK. I guess I can make the HOWTO even more precise. You may not mix
either editions of the Speakup Modified, nor may you mix Speakup
Modified iso images with iso images from stock Fedora releases.
The reason is simple. The packages contained in the iso images are not
in the same place, and many are upgraded. There has been almost one
gigabyte of updated files since the release of Fedora Core 3 in
November, for example. Stock Fedora does not include those updates, but
the Speakup Modified does include them.
I'm sorry you're seeing bad download times. This is a known problem, and
we are working on it. However, don't expect a fix in days. It will take
weeks at best.

Hello folks,
I am wanting to install a Linux partition onto my new laptop hard drive, as my old one recently bit the dust. I am trying to duel boot Fedora Core 3 along side Windows 2000 which is on a 40 GB NTFS partition. I have tried using tools such as Partition Magic to resize the main partition to make room for Linux, but for some reason when I reboot the system the changes don't take. I recall reading about NTFS, which is a Linux tool designed to safely resize NTFS partitions when preparing to install a secondary operating system. I was wondering if any of the Linux tools such as NTFSresize have been speech-enabled or come on a rescue disk which contains Speakup or other screen reading system. I'd really like to get a working Linux install on this machine if at all possible. Thanks for any assistance.
Regards,
Steve

Perhaps someone will correct me, but I'm aware of any free tools that
resize ntfs. Partition Magic does, though.
Also, make more than one partition for Linux. You want your /home on a
separate partition for the long term. Heck, you might even want it to be
a VFAT partition, so the files on it will be visible under both OS, but
then I also have heard rumors of a Win plugin that reads ext2, so maybe
not.
Beyond this I can't help. I haven't touched Windows in over a year.

I was looking at this a while back on freshmeat, and yes, there is a
windows driver out there that can allow windows to read/write
ext2. Unfortunately though, it doesn't work with win9x/me, only newer
versions.

If I may add something.
It seems like the downloads are capped. I start out with a moderate, if not
excellent, speed of around 107kb/s, it quickly then halves and halves again
to around 27.5 from around 50, then it sometimes halves again ...
Take care,
Sina
