fetchmail question

fetchmail question

I am in the process of changing from DSL to a cable ISP connection.  What I
haven't been able to figure out is, how to get fetchmail configured to get
my e-mail from my new IS Because there is no domain name to supply to the
poll statement.

Hi Richard. So you don't have a pop3 domain? Your isp doesn't host mail? I can send you my checkmail script if you want it.

Well, a pop3 server has to be on a domain. So "pole mail.mydomain.com" should work.

The only time you would use the fetchdomains keyword is if the ODMR or 
ETRN protocols were being used.  Just put the name or IP address of your 
POP or IMAP server in the poll statement.

Just give your ip address where you have your domain name. It's
faster that way anyway--no dns to bother with.

You mean the address of the e-mail server changes from time to time?
Never heard of such a thing.  I can well understand your own I/P
address changing, hence dynamic assignment but the e-mail server must
have a static I/P address.  If the address to the server is changing,
there must be some way to address it as there would be no other way
unless they have some arbertrary name assigned and they map that to
the address.  <hmmmm> sounds like a DNS deal if that is what they are
doing at all.

No, no, no, Richard. You don't put in your IP number, you put in
the number for your mail server. Don't tell me they dynamically
assign themselves a different ip every few days just for the fun
of it.

I don't quite see what you mean here; does the ISP give you a numeric
address for the server? If so, just put the numeric IP address in the
poll statement - that should work fine.

fetchmail question

Folks,

I have a question regarding fetchmail. I have fetchmail working just 
fine on box A.
I setup fetchmail on box B and moved the exist fetchmailrc file over 
from box A to B with the hopes of doing a drop-in replacement. I keep 
getting an error from fetchmail that says fetchmail: no mailservers have 
been specified. This of course is rediculous as the configuration file 
is exactly the same one I was using on box A. The permisitions are 
correct, I know all dns names can be resolved from that box and well I'm 
flat out of ideas. I also did scrub through the logs, but can't find 
anything and fetchmail only provides that error message. 
Oh also I was considering going from the usual spool/mail setup and 
having each user a mail directory in home. Is there a simple enough way 
to do this if I'm using Spam Assassin, Procmail, and either Exim or 
Postfix? I guess the question is there any reason other than keeping 
mail in the user's home directory thus freeing space for the /var 
directory and perhaps for security reasons, would I gain anything by 
continuing to use the spool/mail setup over the maildirs being in the  
/home/user.
Ok I do need some cofee I don't think that made sense. grin

Scott, I've got no idea what your fetchmail problem is all
about. Maybe try reinstalling fetchmail, and see if that makes a
difference.

As for moving from mbox files in /var/spool to Maildirs in the user's
home directories, the only mtas that I know of which support Maildirs
are qmail and the courier mail server.

Having said this though, I believe that newer versions of procmail
support Maildirs. So, you should be able to pipe your mail from your
mta, through spam assassin, and then through procmail, which would put
the mail in the user's Maildir.

In order to create the Maildirs, you will need the maildirmake
program. I don't know where you could get that separately, mine came
with qmail.

Maildirs are also crash proof, whereas the standard mbox files are
not.

fetchmail requires a .fetchmailrc file,
which is usually in the /usr/share/doc/fetchmail directory somewhare.
.fechmailrc
should be in your home directory.
min is in
/home/barryp/.fetchmailrc

Thanks, yes I have one of those. Actually the system-wide fetchmailrc is 
in /etc, but the one I am using is in /home as you stated.

Could you send me your /etc/fetchmailrc as they can cancel out.
I usually add a
fetchmail command to my .bash_profile or my .bashrc file in /home/barryp
Also, if you are using new libraries,
you should use exim4
rather than exim3.
when given the option to permanently update to exim4 you should do so.
Once the update is complete, fetchmail works fine.
In debian, exim4 is available in unstable.

I found the problem with Bill's help. I apparently misunderstood the 
purpose of the system-wide fetchmailrc file. I placed one in my home 
directory and it worked just fine for fetching my wife's and my mail.
I need to go back and figure out what Debian does with the system-wide 
fetchmail file and perhaps it points back to the one in the user's home 
directory.

Hi Keny,

Yes I did and I had that configured as such, but still didn't work. I 
don' tknow why, but hell it works now or it seems. I'll try moving that 
file about again and see what it says, but it really should have worked.

I run fetchmail as a daemon which gets started from my ip-up
script, and I put the .fetchmailrc file in the home directory for
root. That arrangement works great, and fetchmail lets me
redirect the mail it fetches to my several local users.

I found that if /etc/fetchmailrc is missing the system will get the mail
if ~/.fetchmailrc exists and you make a  call to fetchmail for each user
that requires.
I could never get the system-wide fetchmail to work properly in debian.
The documentation didn't explain it properly.
If you get your /etc/fetchmailrc file to work for you, let me know.

Hi Scott:

Maybe a stupid question, but does your second box have an MTA?  fetchmail
needs one.

If you want a closer look at what fetchmail is doing, run it like so:

fetchmail -Nv

Just control C out of it when you've seen enough and then run it normally.

Ay there, I'll try fetchmail with the parameter you suggested. I didn't 
find that in the man page. I did install Exim on that box as that very 
thought entered my mind.
