Hello, list. I am sure all of you have gone through this before, but since I
am now taking Linux more serious now that I have a working slackware 8.0
machine I am looking for a list of the following speech friendly apps.

does anyone know of any good MP3 players and encoders?
Does anyone know of any good wav file recorders?
Are there any OCR apps for the Linux shell that work with speakup?
Also how do you get a printer setup and configured under Slackware 8. Any
special suggestions of printers.
I realize my HP ink jet probably is out, but I still have an Epson LQ570
from ages past I can put on the parallel port for Linux if I have too.
Also I've heard there is a rc file for lynx that will number the links on a
web page. If someone can point me to this I'll try it out.

Hi Thomas -

I am very happy with 'lame' for encoding and decoding mp3 files. Your
slackware distribution comes with mpg123, an mp3 player, and with the sox
package which contains "play" and "rec" for playing and recording wav
files.
Check out Matt Campbell's trplayer and Realplayer8 for a text console
interface to Realaudio streams and files. You can get there from
www.linux-speakup.org

For printer setup, make sure you have the Ghostscript, Ghostscript fonts,
and Apsfilter packages installed.  Then, go to /usr/lib/apsfilter and
execute setup as root.  It lets you pick your printer from several lists.
You'd be surprised to find what printers are supported.  Oh, and to make
life easy, before you run setup, delete /etc/printcap and
/etc/printcap.orig.  This will force the setup script to create a fresh
copy of the printcap file and you will  find things go easier.  There is
also cdparano for ripping audio from CDs, but I don't know much about it
as I haven't played with it much.  Hope this helps.

Hmmmm, I have an HP laserjet 5l here,
and I didn't find it in the list of supported printers
when running setup for apfilter.

There is no reason to not use the HP LaserJet 4 driver. In fact, in
winblows world, this is the driver of choice if you want speed. All the
laserjets work with this driver.

For playing mp3s, try mpg123 already included with slackware.
To encode mp3s, you can use a few different programs.
I use bladeenc, since that was the first one I came across, and
because there was already a slackware package for it.
To do ocr (assuming you have a supported scanner of course), try gocr.

as far as lynx goes, hit h for help and there is a link that will get you some nice lynxrc and lynx.cfg files, but I wonder if there is a way for the cursor to be placed on the link so you could just hit the 5 or 8 key with 
speakup to read the current line/link?
I also have not found a way to turn off frames.
Also for those using mutt, where do you find the muttrc file as I can't locate it as I don't care for the 'vi editor cause I for got how to use it so resort to pico.
