ok folks. I need to pose a question to you all that I have already asked before, and the responses some time ago suggested that redhat may be the best way to go... things may have changed since folks on the speakup list are talking about the lack of built in speakup support with new versions of redhat.
So. the question is... for a blind person, new to linux wanting to have a speech based system with emacspeak and speakup and wanting to start taking advantage of newer stuff with gnome etc. and also wanting good support of new hardware... which linux distro would people recommend.
I am hearing that slackware or debian or redhat are the three that most people seem to use, with redhat looking a bit shakey lately. slackware 9 seems to have the newest gnome stuff...???
or maybe people think that redhat 7.3 with a speakup kernel is the best way to go?
please give me your thoughts.

Personally, I use Slackware 9.0. I haven't, however, played around with
the gnome accessibility that I have heard is included. I did try Redhat
8, but I found Speakup to be very slow, whereas the rest of the system
ran normally. I especially noticed this when using the review cursor to
read a character at a time. I haven't tried Debian yet, as the bootable
CD doesn't have a Speakup kernel, at least not one that I can find, and
the boot floppies on the Speakup web site are for the previous version.
Well, hope this helps, and if anyone knows where I can get a Debian
installation CD set that includes a Speakup enabled kernel, please let me
know. I would love to try it.

I've worked with bsd platforms for years spisificly freebsd, I wish speakup
would be ported to freebsd someday... but slackware is the one I found
easest to install. I like the hardware support, and it doesn't take much
room up like rh does.

Well, that's kind of a matter of taste. I personally prefur slackware, and
have since I first began using Linux. However, there are others who sware
by Redhat or Debian.

I was a Slackware man for a few years, tried RH a couple of times, but
went back to Slack.
Then, I was out of Linux for a while, and upon coming back a couple months
ago, I decided to try Debian. It's the best compromise between the
spartonness of SLW, and the bloatedness of RHL; with all of the
functionality (should say availability) of the latter.

Slackware doesn't come with as many apps as Redhat, which is on 3 CD's or
Debian, which is on 7 CD's. Slackware is only on 1 CD. However, from
what I can see, they seem to pick only the best of the best apps to put on
the CD. Being a 1-CD install also makes it much easier to download, which
is always a plus.

The Extras CD contains some optional packages, but they can also be
downloaded from the "extra" directory of the Slackware FTP site or one of
its mirrors. Many of them are specialized, such as numerous packages for
HAM radio plus an older version of Brltty and Emacspeak. There is also a
copy of the source code of each and every package. Once again, it could
be downloaded by hand. The only thing you really get with the boxed set
that can't be downloaded from the Internet is the "Live" CD. I have the
boxed set for Slackware 8.1, as I didn't have high-speed access at the
time it came out. The Live CD is a complete self-booting version of
Slackware with pretty much all the software. It could be used as a demo
and I've used it as a rescue disk as it includes parted, fdisk, etc. It
has all the Speakup kernels and even Brltty. It can be real handy.
Slackware may be a bit scimpy on its packages and hard to get set up for
some people, but its author has been very willing to make his software
accessible. I'm willing to put up with some rough edges if the author
clearly cares about his products being accessible. Besides, Slackware is
getting more polished now to keep up with the big boys.

The boxed set includes the install CD, a live CD, and source code. I am
thinking that the source code is on 2 CD's. It also may include the
'extra' directory which can be downloaded from the FTP servers if needed.
These are apps that are not part of the official distribution, but have
been contributed by other people. Some of these apps eventually make it
to the official distro.

I think some people have already answered this question some what but
I should add that the basic slackware directory containing all the
application binaries now exceeds the size of a single CD image. Even
the CD building instructions mention leaving out gnome or kde and/or
both to build the primary CD. I downloaded the entire directory tree
from a slackware mirror site today and built my own four CD set; the
first CD is all the top level files under slackware-9.0 plus the
slackware directory excluding gnome, kde and kdei; I also included
isolinux . The second CD is the rest of the base slackware directory
and all the source dir except for gnome, kde and kdei. The third CD
is the rest of the source directory. I put zipslack and pasture on
this last disk.
Donno if that complies with Slackware's CD layout but it works for me:)

but isn't it true that debian has even more apps to offer than rh?
i am just reading the slac page and it seems that they retain the netconfig and other such apps like pppconfig to configure things. something that red hat has chucked out in favour of gnome tools. dissapointed in rh on this issue.

I don't know. If I gave you the impression that I was recommending
Redhat, I apologize--I was recommending Debian.

Debian certainly does include with the stock distribution, things such as
