I am confused by the following option in the .config file as patched by
Speakup:

Enter the four to six character synth string from above or none.

I certainly get it as regards a particular synth. But, do I type 'none'
and press enter, or do I type nothing at all and simply press enter if
what I want is a kernel that will come up silent?

I am currently configured with ltlk as my default, and this works just as
it should when the Litetalk is connected. Regretably, on this particular
machine, the boot hangs if no synth is present.

So, does the 'none' option do the trick? And, do I actually type that in?
Or do I leave it blank?

Hi Janina: If you want it to come up with no synth you enter the
string "none". Make sure you have the most recent version of speakup
out of cvs. Also, have you tried booting with no synth with this
version you are running? I thought we had resolved the problems with
systems hanging.

Hi,

Please help us all get this straight...

If we choose a specific synth during "make config" (eg. LTLK), a normal boot will expect/use a litetalk.

If, on a boot at some later time with no synth attached (or a different synth attached) we can choose none (or whichever synth is currently attached). What is the parameter to give to the lilo prompt to alter the no-synth/other-synth behaviour?

	Thanks,

You can only run synths you have built-in to the kernel at compile
time. If it is a production kernel i.e. from a distribution then all
synths are built-in at compile time.

The lilo command line switch is:

linux speakup_synth=whatever

You can also use the speakup_ser option to force a given serial port.
If you give the string "none" instead of a synth the kernel will turn
speakup off and not probe for a synth.

Just to confirm I can boot linux with no synthesizer attached and the
system does not hang.

Hi, Kirk:

Well, I thought you had thie issue of booting even if no synth was
connected worked out, too. But, perhaps this Thinkpad is the exception
that proves the rule? I suppose it may be the Phoenix BIOS. But, it
definitely doesn't work on this machine.
So, I have recompiled with 'none' as the default. I have added some
symlinks in /boot for each of my synths, e.g. ltlk, dectlk, etc., and
added each of these in lilo.conf as a separate image with an appropriate
append= line for each. This works like a charm. I can choose 'silent' and
boot without speech, or ';ltlk' and boot with the Litetalk, etc.

Now, for the rest of that nagging agenda! <grin>

Thanks for the prompt response this morning.

I got a question for u. or anyone that could help me..
I've just installed a copy of linux redhat 7.2 and as yet I've not seen
talking boot images for it.
The problem I have is I want to get it up and running but not sure how to
achieve this with no speech..
I've not had any kernel building experience and I can't access /dev/fd0 on
my linux box for some reason. nore can I do anything with the network yet..
any help would be greatly appreciated.. I do apolojise as this is way off
topic and I should've started a new thread for this one.
thanks heaps all..
Shaun..

Hi Shaun: Bill Acker is our Redhat man. He should be reading these
so maybe he'll give you a note. You could also write him at
wacker@octothorp.org. I think he is working on the 7.2 distribution
currently.

Duh, uh!

Sometimes I feel pretty dumb.

I confess I didn't do that. Maybe because I had experienced these later
versions of speakup continuing to boot even if my synth was off, I never
thought to actually specify "speakup_synth=none." Like I say, sometimes I
feel dumb! <grin>

I post this in the interest of full disclosure. I would test this, but I
simply overwrote the kernel I had before, so can't without compiling
again. I would assume, though, that this was my ignorance, and not the
fault of the speakup code. So, please forget what I wrote yesterday, and
please pardon the noise.

If there's anything that would have cleared this up for me, it might be
the way the prompt comes up in the .config. I admit that the way it is
now,

Enter the four to six character synth string from above or none.

is grammatical. I have, however, seen much poor grammar in technical
documents, so I was simply not certain that this prompt meant that I was
actually to type 'none' as opposed to entering nothing at all and pressing
enter on an empty field. That's why I posted my question yesterday. I'm
glad I did, of course, because I resolved my problem and I learned
something I should have known. However, it might have been clearer to me
with one additional word in the prompt as follows:

Enter the four to six character synth string from above or enter none.

Just a small suggestion.

Hi all,

I have seen a lot of strange version numbers for RedHat floating
around on this list. The current version is 7.0 (Guinness). The next one
will most likely be 7.1, although the RedHat folks get a bit snippy when
people call it that because it hasn't been officially announced. If you
tell me the actual version of RH you have installed, Shaun, I should be
able to get a kernel to you right quick.

I don't know, Bill, but I personally have seen Redhat advertising 7.3 on

Victor:

It would help if you would provide a specific url when posting this kind
of assertion. I recall you said something like this some days ago which
got me to go directly to the Redhat site, where I found no such thing. So,
next time you see it, kindly snag the url and paste it in to your post.
Can you do that, please?
