Hello list, I am not sure if this has all ready been discussed, so
forgive me if it has. I am wanting to play around with the cd based
firewall, devil-linux and am wondering what it would take, and, how
hard it would be to have speakup support for it. I have asked on the
dl mailing list about doing a headless install, so I wont have to
worrie with speakup, but, don't seem that many people know if a
headless install can be done. If anyone has ever done anything with
it and has any ideas, that would be great. I figured that google
would know, but, I did not find much there either.
Thanks.

It somewhat depends on what you mean by headless. If you mean no
monitor, no keyboard, no problem I run it that way on my servers all
the time. If you mean no video card that's another issue because
speakup uses video memory to provide review functions. On the other
hand if you are running without a video card then you don't need
speakup at all so it is a moot point.

When I run without a keyboard because I almost never use a monitor you
just turn off speakup before unplugging and back on when replugging.

So, does that mean that speakup comes as part of the kernel of
devil-linux? I know nothing about compiling kernels or even the
complexities of how all of it works, but, as I said, I just wanted to
play around with it. I have used speakup along with a doubletalk lt
on debian and did not have any problems throughout the install, so,
will it be that easy with dl? Can I just put in the cd, type the
normal speakup_synth=ltlk thing and get speach? If I could use
speakup to get it going, that would certainly be better than
headless, but, I did not think that you could get devil-linux with
speakup support. I did read that it could be headless after the
install but was hoping that I could somehow have speech before that
point, to get it going at least. I did join the mailing list and
asked the same question there, and have gotten several different
answers, from, yes, you can have a headless installation, to, no you
can't, to, you can only have a headless devil-linux box after you
install it. I am quite new at this and may even get myself into
something I was not looking for, but, figured it was worth a try. Any
more help or ideas on how to get this crazy thing going would be wonderful.
Thanks for getting back.
Jeremy

Well, I don't know anything about devil-linux. I am pretty sure that
speakup is not included in the distribution so you would have to
compile a kernel. I doubt you can install it yourself without a
speakup patched kernel so don't know what to tell you there.

Hmmmm. Well figured I should ask. As I said, I was wanting to mess
around with this thing, but it may be to much unless I want to figure
out how to compile kernels? Any more help would be great.
Thanks for getting back.

It's probably the same as a lot of other distros. There are some that have
neat web interfaces for various things that one just wants to work without a
lot of fuss, but I have yet to find a way to install any of these customized
distros without sight.

That's to bad. As I said before, I am also talking to the different
people on the dl mailing list, so, I will let anyone on here who
cares know what I find out. Thanks for all who replied.
