Hi all,

I have a few questions about Linux and Internet radio.

Are there any free programs for creating an internet radio that runs on a
Linux Machine?
Or, if you don't know, are there any programs that need payment?

Thank you much.

There are programs to create internet radio under Linux. You will need
a server, icecast2 found in cvs on http://www.xiph.org, a
streamer (ices) comes with icecast2, a bunch of music and disc space to
put it on. There is other stuff as well. Do a search for
'linux internet radio' and you should see something.

Hi, thank you.
I am glad that there is a Linux solution ... or maybe more.

There is a free, commandline shoutcast server for Linux, written by
Matt Campbell. I think you'll find it in both source and binary 'rpm'
form.

Do you know if these servers need to be installed by the root account, like
a web server, or I can use another account?

Thank you.

You'll certainly need to install it as root. Not sure about running
it. Matt's pretty concise and informative in his doc's.

Hi Teddy,

Hmmm, I think I would safely assume that you'll need to use the root account
(or sudo to gain root from another account so configured in /etc/sudoers) in
order to do this.

Hi there.
most of the server programs I've seen u can either compile them from
source as root or in the case of shoutcast, just put it in yer home dir
and go for it. as long as you tell it there it's config files are it's not
a problem.

The Icecast server can and should be ran as another user besides root.
