Hi.
Can anyone tell me if this deal on a 486 notebook really sux? I think it does. Found it on pricewatch.com:
(Not New) REFURBISHED - 4400C, 1Year Labor/90days Parts Ltd. Warranty
486/25,8MB/200MB Hard Drive, 1.44 Floppy, Active Color,Serial/Parallel ports no adapter included
(Part - T4400C )
$ 89
I mean, what are you supposed to do with that? Linux will barely run on it. If someone offered me one for free, I'd take it. but not for $89.
Thanks.

Hmmm, probably the biggest problem there is the hdd, and you'll probably
find that most of that $89 is for the lcd display. Still, it'll handle
Linux ok, but your bigbgest problem would probably be the lack of a cdrom
drive, though I do believe that the Slakware A disk series will still go
onto floppies, which is the minimum neededc to get get system up, so you
can install over the net or whatever. Wouldn't go for it personally
though, as I have a 486 notebook with higher spec.

The slowest notebook I have now is a toshiba 75 mhz with 800 megs of hdd.
I'm thinking of putting linux on it. Toshibas are good machines. My first
computer was a 386/8 mhz with 80 mb disk.

Ah well now, my first machine was a 286 IBM ps/2 2011-c34 with 1 mb of RAM and a 30 mb hd. I still have it too, though you can't do much with DOS and such a small amount of resources. It's in good condition too, I just need to get hold of a floppy drive to replace the original.
Well, that's all from me about my first machine.

Well, I learned to type on an apple 2e with 2 disk2 floppy drives and
talking typer from APH with one of those echo synths. Hated it! Used to make
it crash and make the teacher come over and fix it for me even though I new
how. Sources tell me that it's still in the "Computer Lab".

The first machine I had was a Toshiba T1200 with an 8086 processer
that could be turbo charged? up to 8 MHZ and a
20MB hard disk. It even had 640K of ram! It did not have the back lit
screen though. That was an option I didn't need. If I remember
correctly the caust was about $4500 CDN direct from Artic Technologies
with the Artic internal card which fitted into that strange slot in the
back and Business Vision v2.0 something. That was back in about august
of 88. I still have it but the LCD is screwed up and the battery pack
has given up the goast.

Hi
I have 2 or 3 IBM ps2 mod 30 286s.
They have 20 mb drives in them. I may have a floppy if you want it.

Yeah, go for it, should be ok. Which distro are you thinking of using?
You'll have to be a little careful of what packages you include, or you
could leave yourself with no hd space to work with. But I know what you
mean about Tosh machines, they are good.
Cheers.

Probably Slackware. Installation is gonna be fun since the cdrom for that
machine is a 2x external parrell port SCSI drive. Barely runs under windows.
And then one of the jumpers fell out and it won't autodetect during boot
anymore.

I liked the cricket and echo and textalker better than the speech that
comes whith the braille and speak or type and speak. The echo emulation in
the doubletalk internal I like better than the doubletalk I have now. I
geus I like it for the same reason I like the accent p c. The speech rate
is rappid and sharp sounding to me.

Hmmm, well, it's possible that not all of the jumpers serve a noticeable
purpose, so you could always try just replacing it with another one.

Hi Doug and list.
Actually Doug I actually have my first machine kicking around here as
well and it is a similar setup to the one you described Doug.
However, mine is a tad bit newer haven been received in 1989 and it has
I think BV 3.03 on it.
In my case the battery still holds out I believe and I think you can see
the screen though I've not booted it in a dog's age, should probably do
so to just check out its status.
I have also thought about setting it up as a terminal to use for
interacting with the HP 712 I have here which runs HP-UX version 11
though in some ways it is pointless as i can do that interaction even
better from a Linux box running speakup.
To add to this topic I have an Accent SA from 1989, it's actually what's
connected to my Linux box, and I have an Accent PC sitting in my filing
cabinet and I think it's from 1988 or 89 though I only obtained it about
4 or 5 years ago.
Regards to all.

Just for grins, let's laugh about my first computer. It was a heathkit
h/z89/90 with a single sided floppy and HDOS operating system. I got CP/M
for it, a couple of double sided floppy disk drives and a memory board with
a meg of memory. I put nearly $2,000 into that little machine and used it
for about 10 years and wrote my own speech program for it in CP/M. It was
nothing to brag about but it was fun to play with. Oh yes, I also used a
type-n-talk speech synthesizer and liked it.
The first hard drive I heard of was an 8 meg drive and I thought that was
great because it would hold about 10 to 20 or even 40 of the floppies. We
even looked seriously at 8 inch floppy drives though I only used one of
those at work.
I wonder if the ancients talked like this about different types of wheels?
Enjoy!
Bruce

Nope, I think I'm the only student in the state of CT that even knows about
linux. The machine's probably still sitting in a storage room someware.

Now that is interesting that the state made you give backa 386 last year? A
386 in the age of Windows? Now either they have caught on to linux and the
productivity that can still be realized from even older machines, or the
Governor is collecting scrap metal to pay for XP. Grin.

Well, my 386 was a state machine so I had to give it back last year. It had
a keynote gold synth built in, and had pretty good speach. I got sort of

Ok, since we are talking about our first systems, mine was ( is ) a comadore
pet with 8K of ram and the only input device was a tape drive. The only
reason I mention this is that I just stubbed my toe on it last weekend and
my wife tried to get me to throw it away. I firmly told her that she would
go before that box. I'm thinking of donating it to a museum but i'm not sure
I can part with it. Even though it's got about 3 inches of dust on it.

Ah well now, my first machine was a 286 IBM ps/2 2011-c34 with 1 mb of RAM
and a 30 mb hd. I still have it too, though you can't do much with DOS and
such a small amount of resources. It's in good condition too, I just need to
get hold of a floppy drive to replace the original.
Well, that's all from me about my first machine.
