Hi Everyone,
I think it's called Launchpad
I've been looking into it, but the pages I found don't seem to indicate if
Ubuntu for PDAs using Speakup is ready yet for download.
Does anyone have any clear information on this?
I am chomping at the bit to get my hands on Linux for a PDA that speaks.

Glenn,
The problem that you run into with speakup on PDAs is that
such devices do not have serial ports implemented on an ISA
bus like a PC. So even if you get linux installed there, on an
ARM, X-Scale, NEC, Dragonball, or whatever processor,
the code that initializes and writes to the serial ports will not
work, will not even compile.
Now maybe if you're doing software speech that doesn't
matter, but it still does matter, because the speakup code is
patches to the kernel, and when the kernel is not in the x86
tree, then parts of speakup don't jive with the source. This
doesn't mean it's not doable, but it does mean that at least
some modifications would be required to make speakup
work on PDAs since they are not on the x86 platform. It
may take some doing just to get the kernel to compile ...

Thanks Doug,
So is there a software speech that will fit onto a PDA with Ubuntu, or
another project?

I have heard of people doing some software speech on ARM
processors, but I don't remember the details at the moment.
I will try to find some info though. Actually I think someone
on this list said they were running software speech on ARM.
As I said though, that's only part of the puzzle, to connect
that to speakup would require some speakup mods to work
on ARM I think. Correct me if I am wrong on this anyone.

Ubuntu gutsy uses 2.6.22, which means speakup won't work.

Hi,
I have built and ran espeak on the mobilis ARM-based machine but not yet a
screen reader.

Hi,
Does the Icon from Levelstar count? It's an Intel X-scale device with
software speech, Linux, Speakup and such at least.
Thanks,
Zack.

The manual for Levelstar Icon states "The console option lets
you use the Linux command prompt and any Linux programs
you have compiled for the unit. The console uses the Speakup
screen reader, and all of its commands are supported."
http://www.aph.org/tech/pda_doc.htm
So they have it working, but I'm pretty sure you can't just
grab the stock speakup and apply the patches to an ARM
kernel and expect it to work without some modifications.

yes, but it is not open-source, in that we cannot use the software on our
own PDAs.
That is what I am looking for.

Glenn,
Their menuing system may not be open source, but they provide all
the access you want to hook to it. Also it has a console mode
that is standard linux and you can do whatever your heart desires
there. I have installed linphone there and am looking at
installing a couple of other apps on the device, which Levelstar
and APH may not support, but which I can do because they have not
closed the system to me. Quite the contrary, it's mine and I can
do whatever if feel appropriate to it. So to answer your
statement, yes you can install whatever your heart desires on it
and have all the fun that I am having.

We are using software speech, so we aren't using the serial ports. If you want to use hardware speech on the ARM, you would need to create a patch for that. Early on, we had a prototype with a different processor and had it connected to a double talk chip and added the appropriate port configuration to speakup. I didn't make the patch though, so I don't know exactly what was done.
Mike
>>> doug@proficio.ca 08/17/07 09:47AM >>>
I will try this on ARM920T (EP9302) shortly.
I will also try this on AVR32 (AT32AP7000)!
But this patch assumes you are not using any serial
ports, right? If serial port access to external synth
was need on ARM (or any non x86) then surely
other patches would be required.

It has been a while since I patched the levelstar kernel, but I think I just had to add a few lines for the missing serial port defines that would be missing from an ARM kernel.
If you go into speakup-drvcommon.c, you can add the following lines:
#define STD_COM_FLAGS (ASYNC_BOOT_AUTOCONF | ASYNC_SKIP_TEST)
#define SERIAL_PORT_DFNS \
{ 0, BASE_BAUD, 0x3F8, 10, STD_COM_FLAGS }, /* ttyS0 */ \
{ 0, BASE_BAUD, 0x2F8, 10, STD_COM_FLAGS }, /* ttyS1 */
I can't remember if this is the only change I had to make, but I think it was. Of course, this won't work on the new Kernels, so you would have to use an older kernel to get it to work.
Mike
>>> doug@proficio.ca 08/17/07 05:12AM >>>
