I am verry familear with the alsa drivers because I helped with the release of 9.1, but I am unclear on some things. Does the screen reader use it's own internal synthesizer? Does one have to be attached? I was not informed on this point. That would include internal synthesisers like the double talk or Accent PC plus the usual array of exter serial synths. Don't think they ever got the JTripple talk to go though. Having said that there are installation disks that include Speakup for Debian, Red Hat, and Slackware on the Speakup site. These give you a talking installation of Linux. Once installed, with a kernel patched with Speakup, you just need to modprobe for your synth -- with the newest CVS Speakup vesion.
