GETING STARTED WITH GRML QUESTION

Hi Kirk,

Thanks for your response.  Unfortunately I sold my old laptop on a NZ 
auction site, since I got a new one in 2004.  Has anyone tried the new 
DECTalk USB synch with JFW or speak?

I'm just in the process of getting the GRML small version because I don't 
have the patience to wait for 10 hours at this time to get the normal 
distro.

After burning what's the process to get a talking version including an 
installation, running?

I believe the grml author or maintainer is on the list so I'll let him
field your question about how to get speakup running with a distro the
easiest way.

As for usb synths in general I don't have working code to support usb
in cvs yet but should get around to doing that at some point.

I personally don't recommend using grml-small for accessibility
related issues as it's a stripped down version meant for sysadmins
only. It does not include any accessibility related software as
those apps are quit big and there's no space for it. Getting Debian
package management, kernel and some core apps inside a ~56 MB ISO is
a hard task already.

If you can't download grml on your own take a look at
http://grml.org/order/ - there are some webshops which offer
worldwide shipping for a small fee.

After booting the CD I type:
grml swspeak
and press enter.

After a few minutes I type:
grml speakup_synth=softsynth
nothing works.

Is their any details instructions to get Speakup to work with GRML?

It may be that you have to type:
speakup_synth=sftsyn
instead of softsynth.

Hi,

Thanks for all your help I now have GRML going.  However I've now created my 
Linux 82 partition on /dev/hda1p2
which is what the synth says.

I want to have the capability to have a swap partition as well as my Win XP 
system and the GRML install on another partition.

So it's like this:

/dev/hda1 Win XP
/dev/hda1p2 GRML
/dev/hda1p3
swap

Please inform me what else I need to do or correct me if I'm wrong.

Partitions inside partitions - interesting partition setup. ;)
You just have to initialize the swap partition running:

  mkswap /dev/hda1p3

grml will detect and use the swap partition then automatically.
If not, make sure there's an swap-entry in /etc/fstab like:

/dev/hda1p3 none swap defaults 0 0

Hi Hank,
Apparently grml swspeak creates /dev/sftsynth and causes speech-dispatcher 
to be loaded.  So, the only thing you have to do is type your speechd-up. 
I believe flite is the default synthesizer but you can also use festival.

I found the same problem.  I have a doubletalk in this machine, and I 
could start Grml with speakup but can't find any detailed instruction on 
getting it to run with software speech.

It has been answered in another mail already. JFTR:

Boot using:

grml swspeak

This will prepare your system for use with software synthesizer
through speakup.  Then run 'speechd-up' after booting up to activate
sound output.

It's documented in http://grml.org/files/release-0.6/grml-cheatcodes.txt
in section "Accessibility related settings".

Hi,
This is Jim Wantz here.  You were correct with:
grml swspeak
But you should type after a couple of minutes:
speechd-up
That should do the trick.  By the way last night I had it running on a 
WINDOWS xp machine and mounted the hard drives and was looking at the 
contents.  Grml is great fun!
Don't forget about chntpw if you ever need to write WINDOWS 2000/NT/XP 
passwords that somebody forgot.
