* flashing Dectalk express?

Hi all. Does anyone know if its possible to find the older Dectalk
express firmware? This Dectalk I have appears to have the newer firmware
installed. The only problem I see with it is that there are sudden
differences in pronunciation, which I have been getting used to but
sometimes can get annoying. For example, mail is pronounced as mayo.
There are some others that I can't think of right now...Bottom line is,
assuming I can actually find the firmware, is it possible to reflash the
express back to the older firmware? I am assuming I would need an EEPROM
programmer and a soddering iron to do the job? Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

you don't need an eeprom burner to do this. the rom in the express can
be updated from a pc i think.

on this same topic, is the firmware in the old dectalk external (the
one entended for ivr systems) upgradable? I'm just curious because I
have one of those manufactured in 1982 running v2.0 of the firmware,
but people I've talked to have newer boxes running 1.8 firmware.

Hi Alex
I have an older DecTalk, with the 4.6 firmware.
I don't know how old mine is, but it is black, and the dimensions are about:
1 inch by 3 inches by 6 inches
and it's on/off switch is in the front right hand corner.
So if that tells you anything, perhaps you have the same model as I do.

Hmm. I assume I need access to a native Dos machine to flash the
firmware, I can't run it from Dosemu right?

Mine is the dtc01, it's about the size of a vcr with a power switch on
the front pannel and some leds and all the connecters including 2 db25
serial connecters and 2 rj14 phone connecters.

I've seen them on ebay too but they're usually pretty damn expensive
like over 100 bucks without shipping. another thi9ng I want to get a
hold of maybe even to control the dectalk with is a microvax. I saw
one on ebay once for $25.

Please pardon my ignorance, but what is a microvax?

It's like a regular vax just smaller. like where a vax was the size of
a refridgerator or possibly bigger the microvax was much smaller.
btw a vax was the line of big computers Digital developed from about
1978 to 1998.

This is an old message, but:

[DTC01] I managed to sell mine in a private sale, for $200.00 pluss
shipping, about two years ago. Synth collectors (and general hardware
collectors) like them, as do music people, who use them for various music
making functions.
I have been told, that the musicians who use them, would not be beyond
paying a thousand for one of them, although none seemed willing when I was
trying to sell, unfortunately.

RJ14 or RJ11? I always wondered what those were supposed to do, as well
as why there were two of everything.

Hi,
yes it's online at www.fonix.com. That's where I d/l'ed the 4.61 firmware
from. They had the 4.2cd firmware. It should flash the old image the same
way the new image is flashed. This involves running a dos based install
program from either DOS or some DOS emulator. It access the serial port,
but things worked fine under NT so I don't think direct hardware access is
required.
