Hi,

Please, would some soul be kind enough to write 5 lines to explain to me the
steps in patching redhat 9.0 with speakup (if it can be done without too
much struggle)? I did get a "silent" 9.0 up and running. Then I tried to
install speakup following the normal steps, but so far without success. Do I
need any special packages? Do I need to alter anything in the speakup
package?

Sorry for asking silly questions, but I am still quite new to Linux, being
more used to the products from a certain Redmond company.

The simple and proper answer to your request is to get a copy of the
2.4.20 linux kernel tarball from ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/v2.4.  Then
get a copy of the checkout script from www.linux-speakup.org in the
downloads area and read the readme.cvs file found there as well.  You
will need to unpack the linux tarball into /usr/src and then make a
synlink to the linux-2.4.20 directory from linux.  You should read the
readme file in the linux directory and follow those instructions
carefully after running the checkout script to patch your kernel.

Here is a basic list of steps

cd /usr/src
download linux-2.4.20.tar.gz
download the checkout script
make it executable
chmod 775 checkout
un-tar the kernel
tar zxf linux-2.4.20.tar.gz
make a symlink
ln -s linux-2.4.20 linux
run the checkout script
./checkout
cd linux
make mrproper
make config
make dep
make bzImage
make modules
su
make modules_install
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /vmlinuz
cp System.map /System.map
lilo
shutdown -r now

You really need to read the various instructions before doing all
  these things.  You've been warned!

Hi, I believe bill has already made some rpms of speakup, and put them on
the speakup site in the Phoebe directory.
However, here is the worl-wind quick guide to installing speakup from
source. Sorry, this is allot more complicated doing it from source.

First make sure the Red Hat kernel source is installed.
Then, get the speakup checkout script, and run it. It should patch the
kernel with the latest speakup.
Now,  switch to the /usr/src/linux/ directory and run make config.
This is the part that is dificult. You are asked many questions about what
you want compiled, modulerized, etc. It is so extensive I can not possibly
explain it in the scope of this email.
Once make config is finished run make dep. This will do the dependancy
check.
Now, do make bzImage. This compiles your kernel.
Do a make modules which compiles the modules.
Assuming everything is compiled fine you are ready to install. Do not
attempt to install unless you are sure this has worked.
do a make modules_install and then make install.

I don't recall whether anyone answered this, but there's now an easier way than patching and recompiling the kernel. You can use the 'rpm -Uv' command on the Speakup
Modified kernels Bill posted to the web site recently. Look at:

http://www.linux-speakup.org/ftp/disks/redhat/

You've managed to do the hard part, which is getting 9 installed. The rest is quite straight forward.

Be sure to check your lilo.conf, or your grub.conf, as appropriate, to make certain the speakup_synth= parameter is being passed to your kernel. If using lilo, don't
forget to run lilo before you reboot, especially after making modifications to lilo.conf.
