Has anyone else had any trouble running the install script for the CVS
speakup? Not checkout, but the actual install executable.
If others have run the one from the latest CVS, and had no difficulty,
this has to be my problem in some way.

Luke: do you have a symlink in /usr/src/linux pointing to linux-2.4.xx?

I don't know if it is the same thing, but I have had trouble with the RedHat
install with speakup integrated.
I use a DECtalk, and it has trouble reading what I am really on, and the
keys designed to read the characters next to the highlighted word reads
previous words, and I cannot get it to read color attributes, as I think it
is supposed to be able to do, if I remember correctly.
I have not tried the install for a while.

Greg,
It did not work. It did not try to access my modem. I got the error "Unknown option 'ttyS4.'

Ok. Run pppconfig. When you're asked if you want the modem to be auto
detected, select no. When it tells you to manually enter your modem
port, hit backspace to erase the 1, and type a 4 in its place, thus
making your entry read /dev/ttyS4. Follow the rest of your
configuration as you have before. You should be able to run ppp_on
now. If it still doesn't work, let me know exactly what happens,
including any errors.

Hi Vic.
Unfortunately, it seems like the tools that configure ppp for you
insist that modems can be only on ttyS0 through ttyS3. The good news
is that these tools are just scripts that set things up for you, and
that you can modify that entire setup if you know what to do. So, if
you can refresh my mind on what distro you are using, I'll see if I
can tell you what you need to change manually. If you're running
slackware or debian, I should be able to help. If it's something else,
then someone else running your distro will need to tell you what
changes you need to make manually.

Hi Greg,
I have made some progress. I have gotten 2.4.26 to compile and have speech on reboot. I checked the /proc/pci file and the dmesg output and the modem is being detected. The output is similar to yours, but the address and IRQ are different. It is on ttyS4.
I ran pppconfig again and allowed it to try to detect my modem. It still wanted to put it on ttyS1. I let it and that did not work. I then manually set it to ttyS4 and when I tried connecting with pon it says this is an unknown device. What can I check now?

Well, you could do make menuconfig, but I've personally found doing it
that way to be more of a hassle then help.
The good news is that once you go through everything, and pick what
you need, all you need do is save your /usr/src/linux/.config file to
do future 2.4.x kernel compiles.
Since I've got more time to write then I did in the morning, and since
you're building a fresh kernel, let me tell you which options you need
for your modem to work. I believe you said you have an USR 5610
hardware modem. If this is so, that's what I have too, if not, then
the following may or may not be helpful.
Looking at the /proc/pci file, my modem listing is as follows:
Bus 0, device 9, function 0:
Serial controller: US Robotics/3Com 56K FaxModem Model 5610 (rev
1).
IRQ 5.
I/O at 0xc400 [0xc407].
If this matches what you've got, then read on to configure your kernel
for it properly. If not, then just hit delete.
The USR 5610 is a bit confusing to get setup under GNU/Linux, but it
does work once you've got it setup.
When configuring your kernel, you want to answer yes to the following
options:
PCI support (CONFIG_PCI) [Y/n/?]
Standard/generic (8250/16550 and compatible UARTs) serial support
(CONFIG_SERIAL) [Y/m/n/?]
Extended dumb serial driver options (CONFIG_SERIAL_EXTENDED) [Y/n/?]
Support for sharing serial interrupts (CONFIG_SERIAL_SHARE_IRQ)
[Y/n/?]
These options should get your modem detected. Note that I'm assuming
that you've read the various howtos telling you how to get ppp and
tcp/ip setup, since you'll want to configure those options as well. If
you haven't done so already, I'd strongly recommend reading the kernel
building howto.
In the few cases I've seen so far, this modem always gets placed on
/dev/ttyS4. Here's what the dmesg output for my modem looks like:
Serial driver version 5.05c (2001-07-08) with MANY_PORTS SHARE_IRQ
SERIAL_PCI enabled
ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
ttyS01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
Redundant entry in serial pci_table. Please send the output of
lspci -vv, this message (12b9,1008,12b9,00aa)
and the manufacturer and name of serial board or modem board
to serial-pci-info@lists.sourceforge.net.
ttyS04 at port 0xc400 (irq = 5) is a 16550A
In this case, ttyS4 is my modem. If this is what you see in your dmesg
output when running with your new kernel, then your modem is detected,
and you can go on with setting up your ppp and internet connection. If
your modem isn't detected, let me know, and we'll figure it out from
there.

Well, how did you get the kernel? Did you compile it from source or
what -- if you compiled it from source then you can tell about the
pnp quite easily from the make config screens -- otherwise depends on
the distribution.

You need to run make mrproper clean, and then run make config. You
should run these after changing to linux, and before running make
dep. All
your other steps look fine. You also want to make sure you answer y to
the configure vga console option, else you won't get the speakup choices.

You seem to have the same modem that I've got here, and it does work
under GNU/Linux. However, I would suggest tackling one thing at a
time.

Hi again,
In my previous message I asked if there was any way to tell if ppp was enabled in the kernel. I meant pnp. To get my modem to work, the manual says pnp has to be enabled. Then it should configure automatically.
thanks again.

Actually, one of the kernel versions he mentioned was 2.4.26, and I
can personally testify that speakup 1.5 works just fine with that.

You need the cvs version of speakup for the kernel versions you have
mentioned. The 1.5 will not work.

You haven't patched the kernel correctly. Instead, get the checkout script from the Speakup web site and execute it from /usr/src. The username is as default, and the password is "please".

Hi all,
I am trying to compile a new kernel to make hardware options work with my PC and to install the Speakup 1.5 version. I am running Debian 3.0 R2 which I installed with the installation files from the FTP site. This means I have 2.4.17 and Speakup 1.0.
I have tried compiling 2.4.26, 2.6.2, and 2.6.5 with the same results. When doing the make config, the only prompt I get pertaining to Speakup is whether I have a Doubletalk PC or not. Speakup is not mentioned anywhere in the config. Below is what I am doing.
Unpack clean kernel image and Speakup
Set Linux symbolic link
Change to Speakup folder and type ./install with no significant errors
Change to Linux
make dep
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
Copy System.map and bzImage to /boot and rename them
Set up symbolic links in / to point to the new files
Run lilo
The kernel boots fine, but there is no speech. I can get back into 2.4.17 with speech by using my linuxold entry.
At this point I am totally frustrated. What am I doing wrong? Please help!!!
Best Regards from Ohio, U.S.A.

Jim:
I've never installed from the DOS batch file, but can't imagine it's all
that different from a floppy disk (ior CDR) boot. When booting from floppy
or CDR, one needs to wait for the drive to pause. A 10 second pause is
built into the installer--not enough maybe--but that's the default. This
is when people are supposed to indicate they want text, and it's when
they're supposed to indicate the appropriate speech synthesizer speakup
will use. Since you put the speech synthesizer into your batch file, maybe
you should put the word 'text' at the beginning of the line that contains
your synth--something like this for a litetalk:
text speakup_synth=ltlk
The point is it should come up talking after a little time. It should talk
a lot. It should tell you far more than you want to know about your
processor, your memory, your pci, your hard disk, etc., etc. Then after a
lot of this chatter it gets around to installation options.
If this isn't happening, why not create a boot floppy and start the
installl that way?

Hi, Jim,
It sounds like you might not have selected a keyboard. Your first
prompt should be language. The cursor should be sitting on "English".
Press carriage return. Next will be the keyboard type. You'll be sitting
on "US". You don't want this one. Press the T key. Since you're using
an external keypad, I imagine you won't want the laptop selection although
it shouldn't hurt. Press the up-arrow key until you hear the word
speakup.
Check with the 8 key to make sure you're on it. When you get there, hit
carriage return and you'll be off and running.
Any questions, call or write. Calling will usually get a quicker
response.
73.
Bill

I am trying to install speakup using redhat 7.1 roswel using the following:
I have two computers here and tried them both so will list the specs on both along with the problems. I'd like to get this installed on the lap top first if I can.
inspiron 7500
192 mb ram
12 gb hd and a second 4 gb hd
I have a keypad ps 2 stile and a usb keypad hooked up. I had to use the ps2 keypad as linux did not grab the usb one.
double talk lt wich is found fine.
I seems to go ok, but can not find the monitor type
Next it runs anaconda
then I basicly get a blank screen, the 7 8 and plus keys read nothing, but at the bottom I hear ns. If I hit the "." key I hear tty7.
I'm wondering if maybe the keys don't work quite right on the lap top with speakup, but from what I could tell the keypad keys worked fine, the 4 and 6 keys beeped.
On the other system I had the same results. I'll skip this one as I'd rather use the lap top unless otherwise asked.
Here is how I booted up
1 boot the machine in to msdos mode
2 changed to my cdrom drive and changed in to the dosutils directory and then typed
c:autoboot where I placed the following bat file.
loadlin autoboot\vmlinuz initrd=autoboot\initrd.img speakup_synth=ltlk
If there is other info you need please tell me how to get it and I will post it. Guess it is a good start, just not quite there yet.

Booting into X is controled by your default run level. Look in your
/etc/inittab file. For redhat, a text login is run level 3. I don't know
what it is in Debian.

How easy is it to install Speakup for the first time? Where can I learn the
