Hey guys.
Does pico come in linux?
For some reason, i tried to access it, and it said it wasn't found.
i typed in pico /etc/file name.  no go.  Any ideas?

Pico is part of the pine package.  Pine is an email reader and pico stands
for Pine Composer.  It sounds like Pine didn't get installed.  No
surprise.  I found that many packages in Redhat are skipped unless you
either install everything which, as you found out, takes up a lot of
space, or go to the trouble of selecting packages one by one.  As for
other editors, you are guaranteed to have vi on the system, but it can be
a frustrating editor for a new user.  Emacs may also have been installed.
It's quite powerful, but also somewhat cryptic.  I don't know if Redhat
has it or not, but there is an editor called joe which some people like.
In other words, there is a lot of choice, but it depends on what is
installed.  You can always go back and install packages later on, so all
is not lost.

ed is probably installed and not all that difficult.

Sinceyou couldn't install everything, some things weren't installed. It
stands to reason.

As it happens, Pine and Pico are being phased out by Red Hat because of
their nonfree license. Instead, get nano. It's a pico look alike. You
can download from my anonymous ftp server:

ftp.rednote.net

Once there:

cd goodies/textapps

and then issue:

get nano-1.2.1-3.i386.rpm

Or, better still, use a program you probably have:

ncftp ftp.rednote.net

Then:

cd goodies/textapps

And:

get nano

and press the tab followed by enter.

Once you've downloaded it, issue:

rpm -iv nano

and press tab followed by enter.

Also a note about nano: it works much better then pico cursoring-wise.  I
find probelems editing files with pico bc of issues with cursoring that
don't seem to effect nano as bad. thus making it my editor of choise.

Thanks for the tip, I now am going to use Nano for editing.  I don't
like Pine in any case, but do use Pico on occasions where nothing else
is available.

By the way, I pulled this nano rpm off a current Red Hat rawhide mirror.
It just seemed easier to put directions to my site than a deep stack of
directories at a major mirror site.

Which is where I obtained the RPM from as I have a mirror closer to me
than your server.

It
's probably because the pine email client wasn't installed. You'll have to use rpm to install pine on your system.
