Hi all,

I checked and downloaded the grml from their site, but their documentation seems to be very unorganized and scattered all over the place.
SO my q is how to boot the cd with a software synth if there is one, and how to switch to a desktop that is supported by a software screen reader?
Or, at least, please point me to a good documentation place where all of these things are explained.

Ned, I think some of what you want is in a message to this list on 24 February.  I'll insert the relevant part of it.  It helped me, once my speakers were connected correctly.

On the grml.org site, there's a wiki link, and from that an accessibility link.  I've generally found GRML documentation to be decent, although there sometimes seem to be gaps in it--gaps, at least, for somebody with my level of knowledge.

Ok  the simple way to boot GRML into software speech is to do this: 

When you start the cd, just enter 

grml swspeak 

after the drive finishes its first short spin.  This will set GRML up
to go into the swspeak mode.  When you hear the message: 

booting finished

just enter swspeak

and you will be in the root account.  You will need to bring your
sound all the way up to 100% by doing this: 

aumix -w 100

Now, you are in the text mode or command line shell and you are ready
to work.  You need to become the non-priviliged user to loomk around.
Just do this: 

su grml

You are the non-priviliged or grml user.  

As far as a graphical desktop, I don't use opne.  I cannot tell you
which ones will work with software speech.  However, I hope that
ghetting you into the speech will help you.

pcm means pulse code modulation.
In terms of aumix think of it as the DAC audio output.
That is, the digital to analog converter output of sound card.
pcm and pcm2 are two outputs, not present on all cards,
most will just have one. The -w is DAC output level for the
first DAC (pcm) while -W is same for the second DAC (pcm2).
You can't ignore pcm because it's the DAC output level.
The master level (volume) is downline from the pcm levels.

start doing things with the keyboard after the post beep?  I managed to 
get grml up and talking only once and had a lot of trouble doing that 
earlier today.  I'm not even sure holding the left shift key down actually 
has any useful effect anymore with grml at least.

Naw, the new ones... just hit enter once, wait a bit, hit enter again, 
wait a bit longer and hit enter... then type swspeak. If you type to 
soon, you'll mess up your keyboard layout, which is really a pain--the / 
key becomes -, etc.

The method Covici gives is lots easier then playing guessing games
with the enter key, and I can confirm it works as advertised. Either tab space speakup_synth=xxx, or tab space swspeak for
software speech will do the trick. I've booted grml 2010 04 about 20 times recently in
this way, and haven't seen a keyboard remap problem once. As for how long to wait after post, give it 15
seconds or so. I usually put my ear close to the cd-rom drive, and
wait until it stops reading the disk (this doesn't mean stops spinning
way too late by then).

Both the 32 and 64-bit full-sized images have speakup in them. It is not 
in the medium or small images.

Yes it is very neat except for that the script had an error of sorts in it. Somewhere in the code where it is supposed 
to determine if you have enough disk space. I had to hack it and just put in a hard coded value in there because the 
/1024 line was causing an error. Once I did that all was well with the install. After installing I had to boot back from 
the live cd and change around the partitions because I wanted /var and /home to be on different partitions and the 
grml2hd script does not ask about any of this. I'm not complaining about that. I'm sure it's designed to get a basic 
system up and running on the one single partition with minimal effort and it did do just that. Using it now in fact.

Just curious, I've been reading a bit about this distro, not  
extensively, but a bit on this list. So, is there any advantage of  
running this distro over Debian or any other distro? Maybe its just  
another distro, but I am curious all the same.

Hi folks.  I have followed the installation instructions with regards to installing grml.  At the boot prompt, i typed grml swspeak to use software speech, since my hardware dectalk synth is not connected to the pc.  After a minute or so, i type speechd-up.  I then waited for a voice response without any luck.  Have i made any typo when running the speechd-up command?  all help is greatly appreciated.  Cheers!

You mean you did install grml to your harddisk?

So you want to boot from live-cd to run grml2hd then?
Boot using 'grml swspeak' and when booting finished run 'speechd-up'
then.

BTW: I noticed that it seems hard for a few people to use swspeak on
harddisk installations as well. I'll try to find a way for you so
this step gets easier too. And I'm currently working on sound output
during bootup so you will be informed when booting finished. And to
activate speechd-up/swspeak you will just have to run 'swspeak' in
future. This will start speechd-up and tune zsh settings as well so
speechd-up should be better to use.

I realize it is trivial but on most of the boxes I work on I place a
ctrl-g bell char in the boot-msg file for lilo and the issue file so
there's audible feedback at the boot prompt and completion of the boot
sequence.

Thanks for the hint. I noticed that ctrl-g is supported by isolinux
as well. I'll integrate as much as possible and will write some
documentation about it as well.

GRML

I have just received GRML, a CD-distro of Linux.  How do I get it to 
boot with Speakup?  I looked at the FAQ but didn't see any 
instructions concerning this.  Thanks.
