Hi All,

What's a good newsreader to use on linux? My nntp server needs
authentication so I need a newsreader that supports that. I already tried
pine but it cant connect bc authentication fails.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi, alex. You may need to get pam compiled in order to use secure
NNTP-based servers. Same for the secure SMTP servers, which is a must if you
don't wa t your server being an oen relay. pam should have been included
with your distro. At least withDebian, it is. not sure about Sal keare th
ough.

I'll install that here once I free up some disk. I'm at 97% used on /.

I'm not sure this nntp server is secure; it just wont allow anonymous
access. but that's probably secure...

Tin can do authentication. I think trn4 and slrn can, but they have to be
specially set up. Pine assumes that your login name is the same as your
login name on the server and I have no idea how to change it. That's just
as well, because Pine isn't much as a newsreader.

Hey Adam. Doesn't Pine get that information via some kind of enviornment
variable? Bc aht it probably assumes is /var/username/mail, or
/var/spool/username/mail. Depends on how your distro is configured though.

Like I said, I don't have the slighest idea. I do know that you can
specify a username with IMAP folders, but don't remember the syntax. I
suspect that it may be possible to do something similar with the
nntp-server, but like I said, Pine isn't much of a newsreader.

I've never heard of bc authentication, but for the standard authentication
on every NNTP server I've seen, you just need to make sure that the
username is the one the server wants. If it's the same as your login name
on your own system, just enter the password. If it's different, put
/user=username at the end of the nntp-serverr line in .pinerc.
          HTH.

If you do try tin, the way to set it up is to either set your news-server
at compile time, or make a file called /etc/nntpserver. Slackware does
this. Just edit /etc/nntpserver to contain the name of your NNTP server,
then type "rtin" to start it up. The r in front tells it to read from the
NNTP server instead of assuming that you store news on your local machine.
If your connection is slow, and you have your newsgroups picked out
already, add a "-Q" to the end of the command. That is, a space and dash
followed by a capital Q in typical Unix/Linux fashion. There is a file
called authinfo.txt in the /usr/doc/tin-1.5.11 directory of a Slackware
installed version. If you don't set up the authentication to be
automatic, you will be manually prompted for a username and password each
time you start up. Look at the man page for Tin, as it's very
informative. There is a menu of options that is overwhelming in its size
and I can't even figure out half the options. The program isn't perfect,
but like Pine, I've used it for about 7 or 8 years in various forms or
another starting at college, so I am somewhat biased.

Another way to get tin to know what the name of your news server is (and
the method I use) is to export NNTPSERVER (all caps) to your environment.
I.E.
export NNTPSERVER=news.softcon.com
Then run rtin and everything's just fine.
Saves mucking about with config files, and if you put it in your .profile
then you doen't have to remember to type it. This is the method I use,
and have never had a problem. Hope this helps.
