Kirk,

 > How much more clear does it need to be?

The only mention of this index page is at the
bottom of this page:

http://www.linux-speakup.org/speakup.html

That's not exactly clear ... I would expect
to find info about CVS wherever a project
has the download info. If that reference to
index page was on the main page, or on the
download page, that would be clear. It's
not exactly easy to find right now.

   -- Doug

I only see these links on the main page
http://www.linux-speakup.org/

http://www.linux-speakup.org/projects.html
http://www.linux-speakup.org/faq.html
http://www.linux-speakup.org/download.html
http://speech.linux-speakup.org/mailman/listinfo/speakup
http://www.linux-speakup.org/reflector.html
http://www.linux-speakup.org/joinspeakup.html
http://www.linux-speakup.org/audio-links/index.html

That's all I see ... I don't see a link to an index page.
Are we looking at the same page? Is this the main page?

http://www.linux-speakup.org/

Even looking at the html source directly, I see only
the links listed above. I see NO link to an index page.

I think Chuck is basically correct about the history thing. The web
pages although important for new comers are not all that useful for
experienced speakup geeks. Another problem is personnel so to speak.
We have many many more projects than volunteers. We have offered up
the web maintainance project to many folks over the years all of whom
have started out gung-ho only to taper off after a little time. I can
only cover so much area and truthfully, I'd much rather code than edit
web pages so they have to do. Now saying that I don't think they are
really all that bad and some portions get maintained by Janina and are
really pretty good.

Okay, here comes the hook line. Wait for it! Do I hear you
volunteering to take it under your belt and treat them poor ol' web
pages the way they deserve to be treated? Cause if I
don't... well... just shut up then. 'grin'

Hi Kirk. I currently am without a day time job and have extra time and am
willing to edit web pages. I am not a 100% completely all knowledgeable
editor for web pages but I can produce something that looks decent and that
is accessible with lynx as well as new comers who still totally use IE.

I wrote most of http://www.asmodean.net with vi and if I've had to edit
while not having access to the server I've done it in notepad of windows.

Doug,

Maybe a little history will be helpful here. I think it is fair
to say that originally the general user was expected to use the
tarball and patch the kernel manually with that package. The CVS
stuff was originally intended for developers and folks willing to
go to the bleeding edge. At some point however version 1.0
reached its ceiling as far as kernel versions went, and the CVS
route was the best choice for more current kernels. Maybe at that
point the CVS option should have been elevated in prominence on
the site, but it remained buried and hard for the newcomer to
spot without being clued in by others. My impression is that
version 1.5 is now a tarball packaging of the December CVS which
everyone has been using effectively for some time.

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for the history ... well this is very inetersting because
Kirk recentkly said don't use the tarball and that the install
script wasn't supported. Also, the docs for installing the mods
for software synth indicate to use the CVS source code. So there
has been a bit of confusion, for me at least. Now it's clear. I
am going to try out the 1.5 speakup from the tarball and apply
the mods for software synth from that source.

I think it's generally a good idea to have a 'stable' release
anyways, and not have people using CVS code unless they are
developing speakup ... that's what most projects do ...

What is happening, is that you are confusing the home page of
linux-speakup.org, with the speakup main page.

Linux-speakup.org, lists the various subprojects, of the speakup
operation. Of these, one (probably the primary), is the subproject with
the same name as the site: speakup. Its main page, linked to from the
home page (read the top paragraph), is:

http://www.linux-speakup.org/speakup.html

Luke

Go to the first link on linux-speakup.org, and "go to our index" is link
number nine, on the page to which that takes you.

That info is on the speakup page on the go to our index page link.
How much more clear does it need to be?

Oh ... I thought linux-speakup was speakup ... and I
didn't find that index page until long after I had
installed speakup and got it working. The problem is
this: the download page only mentions the tarball, and
there is no mention of cvs checkout inside the tarball
(at least not in the 1.0 version). The only reason I
found the index page is because it was mentioned on
this list. It's really not obvious on the web site.

Kirk,

On my browser I don't see that ...

 > That info is on the speakup page on the go to our index
 > page link. How much more clear does it need to be?

I only see these links on the main page
http://www.linux-speakup.org/

http://www.linux-speakup.org/projects.html
http://www.linux-speakup.org/faq.html
http://www.linux-speakup.org/download.html
http://speech.linux-speakup.org/mailman/listinfo/speakup
http://www.linux-speakup.org/reflector.html
http://www.linux-speakup.org/joinspeakup.html
http://www.linux-speakup.org/audio-links/index.html

That's all I see ... I don't see a link to an index page.
Are we looking at the same page? Is this the main page?

http://www.linux-speakup.org/

Even looking at the html source directly, I see only
the links listed above. I see NO link to an index page.

Lorenzo,

This isn't an answer but ... yesterday I noticed that
this page is not linked from the main speakup page!

http://www.linux-speakup.org/ftp/

Lot of great info there ... that I was missing ...
including the checkout script that Kirk was talking
about. But it's not on the main page! If you look
at this page:

http://www.linux-speakup.org/

There is no mention of a checkout script, nor is there
a link to that other page that describes the CVS checkout
method of using the script. I think the info on that
other page /ftp should be on the main page, especially
the info about CVS checkout ...

Hi. Is there a regularly updated page I can go to that will let me know
any time an update has been made to Speakup? I don't necessarily want to
checkout Speakup from CVS just to find out there weren't any updates, and
I didn't find anything on linux-speakup.org that wasn't really old.

Thanks,
Lorenzo
