All,
I am pleased to announce the release of espeakup-0.1. Espeakup is a
connector which will allow you to use espeak as your software
synthesizer with speakup.
Kirk will be posting shortly a location where you can get a tarball of
this release.
If you are comfortable working with git, you can get a read only copy of
the repository by doing
git clone git://hubbs.homedns.org/espeakup.git
Also, a version of this program will be available shortly in the contrib
directory of the speakup git repository and official releases will be
made available as packages I'm sure.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to let me
know.
Thanks,
William

Hi,
What would be the advantage of using espeakup in place of the espeak,
speech-dispatcher, speechd-up and speakup configuration?
Does espeakup support change of speech language in any way?
TIA, Willem

Morning,
I'm looking for the Speakup patch for kernel 2.6.25.x and 2.6.26.x. Does anyone know where I might find it?
Thanks

This sounds interesting indeed. I would be willing to build a
Slackware binary package of this if that would be OK with you. I've
done similarly with Espeak itself and Speech Dispatcher in the past.
Though not well publicised, I'd be willing to do this with espeakup
and put it up or even better yet. maybe get it to be included in
future Slackware distros.

Not fully sure, other than it may simplify the chain to create speech
output. I am not sure if it uses OSS or alsa for output, or if output
driver is configurable.
> Does espeakup support change of speech language in any way?
I would have expected it as it is specific for espeak, but when I had a
look at the value of /sys/modules/speakup/parameters/lang it comes up
with an error, whereas when I do it for my apollo it gives me the value
1.

Dear William and others,
thank you very much for your contribution, it is
very important that people work on accessibility,
on connecting different tools and software synthesis
is definitely very important for the future. I'm also
happy to see that this concept of interfacing software speech
from Speakup that we piloted with Kirk in early 2000
seems to work well.
I see that espeakup has some new nice features
over speechd-up. It is however also lacking a lot
of functionality of speechd-up including some very
substantial and developement-costly things:
internationalization, audio output handling,
configuration and others. It might also initialy
seem to be easier to install and run, simplifying
the whole thing, but this is a false impression.
By bypassing the other accessibility components,
it creates a whole new set of problems and bariers
for cooperation with other accessibility tools. This
is not meant to be criticism as espeakup is in a
very early developement stage.
For the above reasons, Brailcom would like to join
forces with the developers of espeakup to merge
the new functionality of these two projects so that
we can work together on a full, well-designed and
future-sustainable solution. I propose we target at the
issues of easiness to install and setup, on filling in
the missing capabilities and better integration into
the system and into the distributions.
Have a nice day,
Hynek Hanke
