I am a long term JAWS user. Yesterday I got a Speakup talking RedHat Linux distribution installed on my HD. I have an uncompressed Speakup-JFW.map file sitting in c:\Linux\Speakup-JFW. I am not sure what to do next. Should I copy or move the file somewhere?

Can you tell me what this file is used for? I am also a JAWS user and your
mail caught my attention.

Angus:
This makes no sense.
However long you've used JAWS has absolutely nothing to do with Linux or
Speakup. JAWS and JFW have nothing to do with Speakup and Linux.
There is no such thing as a Speakup JFW map file.
Obtaining the iso files is not the same as installing Linux.
Frankly, this message just doesn't make sense. If you want help, let's
start with:
Where did you download from?
What files did you download?
Where did these files get downloaded to? This last question may have an
answer like C:\linux or some such. The other two will not.

Hi
There is a jfw key map up on the site at
ftp://ftp.braille.uwo.ca/pub/speakup/speakup-jfw.tar.gz
as I am a asap user I love the fact that Kirk used that as a model for the
speakup commands..
Larry's keypad layout allways made more since to me than the jfw keyboard
layoutfor reviewing..

Janina,
I would respectfully suggest that you obviously don't read all posts on
the list.
Somebody wrote exactly such a keymap, because a need was identified by
them, and others have used it, for a keymap for Speakup that was similar
for JFW, for those moving across from Winblows. I believe that at least
Slackware has this file on its distribution cd.
Cheers.

I hate asking this question because I know the answer is probably very
simple, can someone tell me how to open .tar.gz files?

Ah, of course. I had forgotten that.
So, let me amend my rant.
Once you have Linux installed and working, you can use this keymap to get
JFW-style screen review.
Of course, the question is whether this mapping still works. We've changed
mappings in the past year, though I'm no expert on the implications, if
any.
End of amendment. The rest of the rant stands.

Ok, I'm sorry for all the posts but I'm getting descript by now, I have to
have a reasonable ability to send and receive mail, access and manipulate
files and completely other every day tasks in Linux. I keep getting caught
up by stupid little things that I'd fly threw in Windows. I'm not giving up
though, I've spent too much time on Linux for that. I've tried the line tar
xzpf [file-name] with and without the brackets to see what would happen.
All I get is the version of the rpm program followed by the line rpm help.
It must be something that I'm doing rong and I apologize if it is but as I'm
not use to this system its not as understandable as I thought it would be.
Thanks

Your email address kept bouncing.
I am really getting the hang of this. the Windows drive is mounted under /mnt/win98. Using cp and mv commands, I took "\Linux\speakup-jfw.map" to /lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty. I am now working on moveing "emacspeak-16.0-1.i386.rpn". The next time I use Speakup, will the speakup-jfw.map get used?
I am not sure how to create a RedHat Speakup talking boot and/or rescue disk. Can you assist?

Hi there, as a follow-up to Janina's note in reply to Angus I figured
that I should mention to Angus that if dons2unix and or unix2dos aren't
present you'll need to install them using Red Hat's package manager,
rpm, of course, if you had an experienced linux user help you who was
ware of the fact that you were dual booting with windows and who
recommended the custom installation or a full install you got both
packages, however; if you went with something like server and picked all
package groups or you went with something like laptop or workstation
which incidentally thw howto re speakup modified Red hat doesn't
recommend you probably don't have either of these packages.
To install these packages you could do something like these commands.
mount your cd-rom with a command like:
mount /mnt/cdrom
cd /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS
Then, install the packages with something like:
rpm -iv dos2unix*
or
rpm -iv unix2dos*
RPM is very useful so as someone who is new having there very own rh
system to use and learn from you might find it helpful in the long-term
to familiarize yourself with rpm.
And, if you've not already figured it out, some commands like rpm and
many of its options, mount, etc, are indispensible so familiarizing
yourself with these early will most certainly prove benificial to you.
I hope this note was helpful and that you enjoy learning Red Hat and
linux generally, good luck, and for now I'm out of here, I need coffee !

A much better way in Red Hat Linux is to rename the file to
"speakup-jfw.kmap". Then, compress it by using "gzip -9
speakup-jfw.kmap".
Now, move speakup-jfw.kmap to /lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty. Next, edit
/etc/sysconfig/keyboard to reflect the new keymap KEYTABLE="speakup-jfw".
Nothing need be done to rc.local.

Hi, Angus:
First, congradulations on getting Red Hat with Speakup working on your
computer.
Some quick tips:
You can mount a vfat partition in Linux. That means that you can make your
Windows files readable and writable in a directory under linux, though you
cannot execute applications directly.
To do so, create a mount point, meaning a directory -- perhaps something
like "winfiles" like this:
mkdir winfiles
Now, you can mount a partition to that directory. First you need to know
what partition holds the files you want. Do you know? Is it FAT32? I'll
guess that it's the first partition and that you use fat32. Your command
becomes:
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 winfiles
Of course, adjust to conform to the facts on your system.
Learn more by reading about mount:
man mount
Remember, also, that dos2unix is a command for converting dos format text
files to unix format:
dos2unix [file.name]
And there's a unix2dos to go the other way, too.
Now, there's great documentation to get you going. The tail end of our
HOWTO has some suggestions. Read the section called "Now What?."
Also, look at the Red Hat Getting Started Guide at:
http://www.redhat.com/support/resources/howto/rhl73.html
Remember, the Getting Started Guide will walk you through many tasks. Skip
the parts about GNOME and KDE, because you can't use them yet. Go to the
parts about shell and command access.
Remember, you can have multiple consoles open. This is extremely handy.
It's a bit like Alt-TAB in Windows, but better. Use Alt plus any of the
first six function keys, F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, and F6, and login. You can go
back and forth between these consoles all day long, meaning you can keep
the guide op[en in one, while you try things out in another.

Janina
Sorry, I have RedHat speaking with Speakup. I am trying to remember how to move documents from my Windows drive to RedHat. I am trying to remember some UNIX commands like viewing files and directories. I know this is different from the DOS dir command. What I have come up with so far is:
cp /dev/hda1\Linux\speakup-jfw.map

Sorry, Thomas. My mistake clearly.
What triggered me, I think, is a missing piece of information from Angus.
I don't believe he ever reported succeeding at installing--after weeks of
bad beginnings. This one looked like another bad beginning.
I was wrong. And, maybe I missed his post about succeeding--I don't know.

Hi, two things. First, I would like to correct Janina for making an
incorrect statement. She said, "There is no such thing as a speakup-jfw.map
file." Yes, there is a speakup-jfw.map and I wrote it.
Second, there is a readme file that ships with the map file that tells you
exactly how to install the file. If you want to avoid recompiling simply
copy the file to your /boot directory. Then add the following lines to
/etc/rc.local.
loadkeys /boot/speakup-jfw.map
