If one types
left-alt f2
orca
goes through the orca setup, then closes the orca window,
what is the reason for,
control alt backspace
then typing
orca?
Thank you for your information.

Hi,
Orca does not speak properly after the setup, unless you exit gnome.
Then log back in. By pressing control+alt+backspace, you logout of gnome.
When you are running it live you will be automaticly logged back in. When
you do this with it installed on your hard drive you will be tossed back to
the loggin screen. Later

Hello everyone. Thanks for your hints. I was able to burn the cd with
the Mac by using disk utility.
Now all I need to do is to have my box reset so that the cd will boot
first. I will let you all know how things turn out.

Hello everyone. Thank you for all your suggestions. I see that the
image size is 698.4 mb. My disk has a capacity of 698.2 mb. Also, my
linux box died about six months ago I think.
The options are for me to use the Mac or windows.
On the Mac, the image would not fit on to the disk. But today I will
see how windows handles this.
You will get another e-mail after this.

Very odd. All 80 minute CD's I have ever seen have been between 700 and
702 MB. I had never seen an 80 minute CD that had a capacity of only
698.2 MB. Sorry about that, writing from experience I guess.

Hello everyone. I went to the following site:
http://live.gnome.org/Orca/UbuntuEdgyEft
This site has interesting information about a live cd with Ubuntu. The
desktop version for pc's has Orca on it.
The image is a tiny bit larger than an image that could fit on to an 80
minute disk. I will write to someone at Ubuntu and find out if this
image should be on a dvd. Nothing on the web page suggested burning to
a dvd. Just thought someone might like to read about this live cd.
The cd image may be downloaded from:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/edgy/
and I will let everyone know if the matter of the image being too large
can be solved by burning it on to a dvd.

It works fine on an 80 minute cd -- I would advise using the cdrecord
option --overburn because it is a bit over.

Hi Yall,
I have been on the list a while, I do not know if I have posted yet
or not. In any case my name is Scott. When I first got on the list. You
guys were talking about ubuntu, I downloaded it. However it did not work on
my Toshiba a55 notebook. I have heard more from you guys. I thought well I
will give the new version a try. To my delight it booted right up. In fact
I installed it on my hard drive. I do need to say. That when you are
restarting the orca in terminal mode just before you run ubiquity, you
cannot for get to type the "&" after--no-setup. The command will look like
"orca --no-setup &".
So far I really like the fact that I can boot right into gnome. However
does anyone know where I might be able to find where the instructions for
enabling speakup in terminal mode, using the software synth are published?
Thank you guys for this list. I really enjoy everything that you people are
doing. While I am at it I would like to wish everyone a happy thanksgiving.
Later

Hi, Speakup is built into the kernel. I don't think there is a software
speech howto, it just seems to be something you "ask your mates about"
before you do it.
I would like to ask a question:
How do I get orca to start talking before I log in? I think the login
manager is called GDM, but I'm not sure. ANyways, is it possible to have
speech at the login prompt?
Cheers,
Chris Norman

Chris,
When the cd stops its initial spin, press f5, then pres 3, then
press enter. This will start the screen reader right after ubuntu starts
up. There is a great help site that outlines this much better then I am
doing. Now that it is installed on my hard drive the screenreader starts
automaticly. My login is not voiced. However the ubuntu startup sound
clues me into when to enter my username and password. I will look for that
site and post it later if I find it. Now I have a question. How do I
initialize speakup in ubuntu when I am in a terminal session? I would like
to use the festival software synth that should already be active, I think?.
Thanks
Scott

Hi, Speakup is built into the kernel. I don't think there is a software
speech howto, it just seems to be something you "ask your mates about"
before you do it.
I would like to ask a question:
How do I get orca to start talking before I log in? I think the login
manager is called GDM, but I'm not sure. ANyways, is it possible to have
speech at the login prompt?
Cheers,
Chris Norman

Beh...I burned a Ubuntu to try it, and my CD spins a lot before it
stops (and by the time it stops, I think it's started loading
stuff). Anyway, for some reason, I can't get it to start up with orca
at all...or at least, with no talking. Anyone else running a system
with no monitor? Anyway; I tried it several times, and this system
*can* boot off a CD, so not sure where I'm going wrong.

I had the same problem -- I guess you might some eyeballs to tell you
how long to wait because you are correct, the cd can still spin. I
heard they are working on something and I am looking at this as well.

I've never waited until the CD stops spinning. Probably a better rule
would be to wait until 2 to 3 seconds after the CD starts spinning,
since the boot menu doesn't take very long to load once the CD starts.
On a slow system you may want to wait 5 seconds, but you shouldn't have
to wait longer than that on any system.

That's correct. 5 seconds is probably good. The CD starts quite quickly
and then there is a 30 second break during which you must press F5 or it
just boots 'normally' without speech.
btw -- we've had a lot of feedback on this point and will test a
starting sound in the next version that beeps when you should press a key.

There is another way that I have done the boot up here it is. One put the
cd in let it spin up five seconds. Press enter. Wait for the ubuntu sound
thirty seconds or so. Pres left alt+f2, then type orca. Go through the
setup close. Now prescont+alt+backspace. Finally press left alt+f2 type
orca. Now you have orca.

I got as far as the partitioner, but it did not like my disk for some
reason -- I saw something about unsupported in the logs, but couldn't
tell what was going on as it would not load speakup at all.

I had problems with the partitioner too, but I need to find where to
report the bugs I found.
First off, I wanted something other than the default big / partition
formatted as ext3, but if I changed anything in the partitioner and
clicked "forward" Orca stopped speaking and even restarting it didn't
help. Then I tried using Speakup, mkfs... and a text-based partitioner
to set things up ahead of the installer and then went to the installer
and told it to manually edit partitions and clicked forward from there.
It went to the mount point selection window, but no matter how many
times I specified where I wanted the "/" root file system it gave me the
error "no root file system" and wouldn't let me go any further. I
decided to just stick with the defaults for now, but I have had problems
with ext3 corrupting the entire file system on a kernel panic and didn't
want to use it for that reason. If anyone has any suggestions either
where to report this or how to get to the next step, please let me know.
Thanks,
Lorenzo

Lorenzo,
I had major difficulty, just like you. I had to get my daughter to
help. I will attempt to describe what needs to be done. However do it at
your own risk. I had my partitions set up ahead of time. I have my hard
drive setup as follows. Partition one NTFS, 2 fat 32, 3 swap, 4 logical, 5
ext3 /home, and 6 ext3 / . Now in order to setup the partition on the
ubuntu setup there must be places setup in each graphical column.
In my case I had to have media for the first two partitions. Then for my
third partition I chose swap. Finally set /home, and / to the final
partitions. I had help with eye balls, I hope that this can provide some
clues for you guys. Good luck

Hi, as soon as you hear the cd spinning up, just start tapping the f5
key. Don't hold it down, just tap it several times. In theory,
you'd make it to the boot menu, have already selected the
accessibility options, and can then just press 3, enter, enter.

Sometimes I have not had Orca come up the first time. Try hitting
control+alt+backspace, to kill the GDM, and it will automatically log
you back in, hopefully with Orca this time. You are using 6.1 aren't you?

i found a better way that works for me
type control f2 then type orca enter
most of the time orca comes up.
i have not installed it to my harddrive yet
i am just playing around with it for now.

Do you have speech-dispatcher and speechd-up? Wouldn't you just:
modprobe speakup_sftsyn; speech-dispatcher -d; speechd-up -d
?

But this is inside gnome -- so speakup wouldn't do much good there.

Cris,
I tried this. I am now actually reading the user manual for
speakup. However I still have not gotten it figured out. I will take any
suggestions that anyone may have. Thanks.

hi scott,
well i thought that i was understanding those instructions right
but somehow i am still not getting speech to come up.
i put the cd in and it spins for several minutes.
i hear music and after a while it stops
then i type f5
the cd starts spinning
after it stops i type 3 and then inter
and nothing happens
wonder where i might be going wrong here.
as i say at the start it spins for several minutes
maybe i am not typing f5 soon enough or something??
thanks in advance

Hi, Speakup is built into the kernel. I don't think there is a software
speech howto, it just seems to be something you "ask your mates about"
before you do it.
I would like to ask a question:
How do I get orca to start talking before I log in? I think the login
manager is called GDM, but I'm not sure. ANyways, is it possible to have
speech at the login prompt?
Cheers,
