my play box has turned into a paper weight

Hi all.

Well, the subject says it all. When running applications on my play
box, they all end up getting segmentation faults. If they don't get
segmentation faults, they apparently aren't executing, since the
system sits there forever, and ever. Sometimes, I can do a ctrl+c or a
ctrl+z, but other times I can't. The same thing happens when I try to
halt the box. It says broadcasting message from root ... and the
system is going down for system halt now ..., but that's it, the box
just sits there with no activity. Sometimes when I hit ctrl+c, I get
shutdown canceled, other times I don't get anything. 

I've also noticed that if I am logged in via ssh, and try to login via
ssh again to have 2 logins going, the client connects, I get the
welcome message,I'm told when my last login was, and that I have no
mail, and then the second connection is just dropped.

Obviously, I've got a hardware problem. However, is it the ram, or is
it the cpu? I am leaning towards saying that it's the cpu at this
point, but am open to other educated opinions.

I have found that when playing with possibly broken hardware (especially
CPU, memory and motherboards) that it is anyone's guess what could cause a
particular problem.  Have you had any power spikes that you know of? Is the
CPU fan operating properly, or has is failed on you recently? I would start
with the CPU fan, as it is a moving part and is most likely to fail in the
first place.  How old is the box? What kind of hardware is it?
Be glad to offer any information I can to help.

There have been no power spikes that I know  of recently, and the
machine is plugged into a surge protector.

I can hear the cpu fan running, so I'm guessing that's ok.

The machine is an AMD k5 133 MHz with about 40 Mb of ram, made
somewhere around 1994.

It's quite possible greg your hard drive is on it's last drive platters.
This sounds like a similar problem I have with my pentium 233 on the odd
occasion.
I find I have to watch the box carefully and ensure that all connections
are tight and that all the hardware e.g. ram, cpu, cards, are seated
properly.
listen to the noises your computer makes next time and also grab the
memtest utility and run it to test your ram.
I can't remember the url off the top of my head but I'll find it and get
it to you if you haven't googled for it already.
just take it one step at a time. it's possible we can find you a way out
for the moment to save you some money at this point.

I'm sure that the hd isn't the problem, since as mentioned a couple of
weeks ago on the list, I replaced the hd that died with a 8 Gb drive,
which is in good shape, given that it works perfectly fine on other
machines. I've also listened for any strange noises from the machine,
and didn't hear anything other then the normal sounds.

I'll look for memtest later today. Also, if it's the cpu or ram, or
motherboard, they're old, and aren't being made anymore today as far
as I know. So, if it's any of these 3 things which turns out to be
the problem, I'll simply scrap this box for working parts, and that
will be that.

Were's LILO?

I noticed during the installation of Fedora that LILO isn't in the options,
Any ideas on how I can get as much from Grub as I did from LILO?

Its surprising how much you can get from trying to install linux.  A local
university gave me access to their network this morning.  it only took me 78
minutes to download the four discs.

Grub is not likely to be a problem unless you have multiple kernels or
operating systems to boot.

But, you can still have lilo. It's there, even if it isn't in the
installer.

First make sure that you have a working talking system. The next step is
not lilo, but an initrd that includes Speakup.

ok, sorry to ask so many questions.

I've made this windows 2000 laptop act like an ftp server . I can access it
from other computers on the network by doing the usual ftp://ip address but
in linux its not working.  I do the following
ftp
open
172.16.7.180
which is the ip address of this machine.

am I doing something rong?

I need to get the FTP working to copy across the Kurnel.

find what's wrong. If it's the ram then that's really easy: It most 
likely takes 72-pin simms which are really easy to get. I think 128mb 
of them costs like $10. I have about 32 mb worth sitting on my desk 
here and about another 48 or maybe even 64 in my cabinate.

Interesting.  I've been unable to find FPM and EDO SIMs in the north east,
with any reliability.  Where are you getting them?

out of scrapped machines. no one seems to want them anymore so I take 
them. hell I may not even use them but they're good to have anyways.
You also could check pricewatch or I think I saw some on

Good point, I'll give that a try. However, I'll probably have to wait
for a sightling to help me rewire the power switch to the new
supply, since it's an at supply, and I've been known to hook up the 4
wires incorrectly, causing a buzzing sound in the walls, tripping
breakers, and throwing any  switches on the same circuit which are on
at the time to off.

Yeah I've hooked those up wrong before. caused quite a bit of noise, 
and fire and soot and stuff came out of the supply. but no breakers 
went.

with those old at supplys,
you need to ensure that the p8 and p9 connecters are facing the right
way. that is with the black wire on each of the connectors in the middle
of that jumbled mess.
greg wait for a sighty you'll run the risk of doing more harm than good
to yer mobo otherwise.

I didn't think you could plug those in the wrong way arent they keyed?
I've fried a lot of shit but never done it by means of the power 
connecters.

I wasn't talking about the motherboard connectors where you need to go
black to black. I was talking about wiring the 4 wires from the power
supply to the power switch.

Have you tried to reboot the box in question?  It's a dumb question, but I
had a similar problem exactly once on a Gateway computer.  I had to do a
power-off reboot, and it never happened again.  Another reason for a
reboot is to see if it still passes the POST (power-on self-test."

Yes, I did reboot it. Also, since it's not a server, I turn it off for
the night, and turn it on when I need it. Yes, after turning it on the
next day even, the problem still exists. Yes, it passes the post.

still have it. it was pretty cheap to.

Could it be your swapspace being corrupted?  Try turning it off.

What is your kernel version?

I had similar problems with stuck processes, on a new compile of a 2.4.20,
which had been running perfectly fine, before I compiled in speakup 1.5,
and some other drivers.  The system was otherwise fine, and if I ran
processes under strace (strace -o /dev/null process), I had no problems.
We never did figure that problem out.

Actually, I discovered something new yesterday. Before, I was doing
everything on that box via ssh, since I'll take the double talk pc's
speech over that of the braille blazer's any day. Anyway, I decided to
actually get logged into the box itself on a real console, to see if
anything would be different. Something did turn out to be
different. Where during the ssh sessions programs just gave me
segmentation faults, and did all these weird things, when I was on a
real console, I got a kernel oops, and then the weird stuff after
every kernel oops. 

I'm running on kernel 2.4.22 on that box now. Since I have not had
good experiences with kernel 2.4.22 so far on any of my other boxes,
I'm going to compile a 2.4.21 kernel for that machine on another
machine, and see if that makes a difference. If it does, I'll just
attribute the weird behavior to 2.4.22. If it doesn't make a
difference, then I'll still blame my hardware. I'll report back with
my findings of course.
