init/login problems

Hi all. i just installed Slackware-9.1. After finding out that dhclient 
was broken, I used dhcpcd and got an IP from the router over here. 
However, I noticed that only 5 ttys were enabled, so I edited inittab 
just like I did on my previous Debian system to add 6 more consoles. The 
syntax in inittab is: console:1235:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 <tty>. 
Example: c6:1235:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty6

And I did this for all 12 ttys. Granted, I got the 12 
consoles...However, I can't login as root in consoles 6-12, nor can I 
login as user (the account being igueths). All the other accounts I 
created could login just fine. Could my problem be something with the 
UID's not being set propperly? Also, init is periodically respawning 
process when it shouldn't be i.e., I get messages about certain consoles 
respawning too fast. Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this? Quite 
honestly, I've never seen this type of behavior before on a pretty much 
newly installed system. Thanks!

Hi there. Upon further examination of syslog entries, I realize now that 
getty is complaining of a missing /etc/ttytype file. This file never 
existed to begin with. Any way I can perhaps create one? I've tried 
several different forms of syntax and getty appears to not like it.

I have both getty and agetty here. The only reason I switched was bc I 
thought perhaps Agetty was causing my problem. However, I might as well 
switch since it's clear that the getty program isn't the problem. Have 
you ever encountered behavior similar to what i described earlier? If so 
how did you fix it? Thanks!

So basically all you did was edit your inittab the way I described, and 
all your users including root could still login? Hmm...Do you have an 
/etc/ttytype file? If so, what's the syntax? It seems I am in need of

Yes, and no. Yes, all my users including root were able to login. No,
I didn't edit my inittab the way you described, since you're using
getty, and I'm using agetty, and you were also missing the term type
(linux) at the end of your line.

Nope, no /etc/ttytype on my system. Why don't you switch to agetty,
write your lines in inittab the way the one I showed is written, and
I'll bet all your login problems will magically go away?

Igor,

I have never had that problem either. My extra lines in inittab
look like this:

c9:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty9 linux

and then of course "tty9" is listed in my /etc/securetty so that
root can log in.

The big problem your having I think is that you aren't listing the terminal 
type on the command line for agetty. You have to do that or the program 
won't know what terminal to emulate. Because your not listing one, it is 
trying to use ttytype to find a mapping. That file is used to map specific 
tty lines to specific terminal types. The solution is to specifically list 
the terminal type. IN this case, the type should be linux and it should go 
right after the tty line specification. So, your line should look like this:

c6:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty6 linux

number of the tty. Second, ensure teh lines in inittab read correctly.

Increment the number for each console. There are two problems I see with

Thx for the reply. I fixed the problem by editing 
/etc/securetty/inittab.

Igor,

In order for root to log into your new consoles you must edit
/etc/securetty and add the names of those consoles.

I've seen the root login thing but only on tty 9 and higer on my 
system. all users other then root can login fine however.
