Hello,
I've been running x86 pcs for years. My current machine is housed in a
tower case under the desk. I'm looking for other options with a smaller
footprint. Cost is an obvious consideration; otherwise, I'd be tempted
to plunk down some serious cash on a laptop.
Any thoughts?

Go get an HP the newer ones are enclosed in a slim line case made by Shuttle. The tower is so small I can almost hold it in my hand. It's got a tv tuner, all your standard ports, even a zip drive. Truely I beautiful machine and only for $539 that was at best buys. As for a laptop I'm looking for one now, but I'd say either a compaq, or an Acer however I'd go with a compaq, since they've been around longer. Be careful of where you go buy your notebooks/desktops I'v seen a compaq as low as $450, but my dad got a new one for $539, and that was an open box special. With the hp you get speakers monitor kb/mouse the only thing I didn't quite get is that the CD rom drive is on its side....hmmmm wouldn't it fall out when trying to put one in? Hello All, If anyone is looking for a laptop, I would suggest an Averatec. I got one for xMas, and I have been very pleased. 800 dollars 100 GB drive 1 GB RAM DVD burner PC Express, 3 USB, 1 firewire, Modem & LAN ports, WIFI, Video out, headphone & Microphone jacks in front, SD card slot in front, switchable WIFI in front, and a Dual-core AMD processor. It only has a 12 inch screen, which is a plus, because I rarely need it, and I can turn it off to conserve battery. Its model is 2300. It is about the size of my Braille note QWERTY, only the keyboard is slightly larger, therefore, it is easier to type on. I got mine from Sam's Club, and I got a 3 year warranty for only 80 dollars. Just try not to bump the machine with the tray open with media in it, and don't wait around to close the tray, once you've got the disk in the drive. The Shuttles from Alienware are pretty nice...you can get really small towers. A barebones system with case/PSU/motherboard starts at about $150. Even if you don't buy from a surplus dealer, they might have something which gives you some ideas of what to look for elsewhere. Note that 'surplus' does not always mean 'used'. I have listed a few sites below which might help you start your search. Bob Johnson's Computer Stuff sells lots of laptop and notebook computers at reduced prices as well as some desktop models. I have not bought anything from this place for years, but the computer I purchased then was very clean, and it is still running. This site is at www.bobjohnson.com Bob may answer the phone himself if you call the number from the web site. Another place which seems to get small sized systems in stock from time to time is PC Surplus Online at www.pcsurplusonline.com They have overused graphical trash on their web site, so finding the right category from their online catalog might be a little tedious. However, they do have a phone number there which can allow you to talk to a human being if you prefer. Another site which might be able to come up with something you like is Pacific Geek at www.pacificgeek.com I have used links (the chain) as recently as a few days ago to place an order on their site. I have not looked over their list of systems for some time, but it might be worth looking over to see what they have. They also have a customer service number so you can talk to a human being if you prefer. Other surplus sites may be available which have what you are looking for. Searching with your favorite search engine with terms like 'small computer' and the like might be helpful. HTH, and have a great weekend.
