Hi all.
I recently downloaded a version of MPlayer but the archive is a type I've
never seen before.
the file name is MPlayer-1.0pre6.tar.bz2, and I've never seen the .bz2
extention. Can I
use tar to unpack this, and what options should I use, or do I need
another utility to do it?
Thanks.

Dan,

The bz2 extension means that the utility "bzip2" was used instead of
"gzip" to unpack it, which is a more efficient compression program. Tar
recognizes it by simply using the 'j' option instead of 'z' when
compressing or decompressing an archive.

tar will do it if your tar is new enough and you have bzip on your system.
just use the j option in place of the z option.

thanks. I guess my tar was new enough because the j option worked.

Hello,
That is a .tar file compressed using the bzip2 compression algorithm.
You can use tar to decompress these. Just give the -j argument, for
example:

tar -xjvf file.tar.bz2

You need WinRAR or Winzip, set the associations and then you can just hit
enter on it, or you can just use the file>open (CTRL+O) command to open it.

Cheers,

Chris Norman.

It's console based, and is called just rar. Like the winrar equivalent
however, it is shareware. I don't remember the home page for it off the
top of my head, but if you go to freshmeat.net and search for "rar", you
should get it in the results. I don't know how similar or different
rar and winrar are in their functionality, since I only used the unrar
utility to extract rar files, and never used the gnu/linux rar version
to make rar files.

You need WinRAR or Winzip, set the associations and then you can just hit
enter on it, or you can just use the file>open (CTRL+O) command to open it.

Cheers,

Chris Norman.

Rar for linux is a console based program. If you happen to have a Winrar
registration, you can even register by copying the rarreg.key file into
your home directory.
