Hello everyone. I hope that this is still an active project and list. As
you probably saw from the from line, my name is Aaron Cannon. I just
recently finished downloading the slackware isos from bittorrent, and am
now working on getting a linux system up and running again. I look forward
to becoming an active member of the list and possibly even contributing to
the project.

Hello folks,
My name is Cris Ali from Washington DC. This is my first time on this list.
I heard so much about Linux and speakup and hope to get some help on giving
it a try. I am not a computer savvy, but if I am given clearn instruction I
am sure I would be able to learn at least the basics. I never used neither
linux nor speakup, and have no idea where and how to start without sighted
assistance. I am also not sure if I would need a special hardware
synthesizer, or whether I can use the built in sound card of my pc. I am
hoping to be able to convert my retired 90 mhz pentium 1 into a linux box.
Any ideas would be extremely appreciated. Again, I have no sighted
assistance.

One place to start learning is the Speakup Modified Red Hat
Distribution HOWTO on Installation which is at:

But, you've already taken the most important step by joining this

Hi. You need to have a hardware synth to use speakup. If you want a
recomendation for a linux distribution, I would recomend Slackware
http://www.slackware.com or Debian http://www.debian.org>. There is a MP3
file on the speakup ftp server which will help you install debian, located
at ftp://linux-speakup.org/pub/linux/goodies/audio-files/ and the files are
named debinstall_1.mp3 and debinstall_2.mp3 I think.

Do you know if I can use speakup with a Dec Talk PC 1 internal sinth?
I have Red Hat 7.2.
I find emacspeak hard to use and I use my Linux machine with a Windows
terminal (SecureCRT) from another computer.

The information about synths is very clearly available on the
Speakup web site. This kind of post shouldn't be happening.
Besides, this is not an example of thinking. Thinking has nothing
to do with what you said. If you were thinking about it, you
would check your facts.
