setting the hardware clock

This is crazy, but it seems my HW clock refuses to be set. I
normally do not ever set it, since my shutdown procedure does
that for me, saving the system time to the hardware clock, and
for a few days that step has been hanging so my shutdown
procedure never runs to completion!!!

What can be happening? What are the commands I can run as root to
set the HW clock from a running system?

If your clock quit setting and you've changed nothing, it's possible the
battery may be failing.  Assuming you have RTC support in the kernel (most
stock kernels do and it's generally a good idea,) type "cat
/proc/drivers/rtc."  It will give the time that is in the RTC and will
show the battery status plus a lot of other info.

Or if you don't mind screwing with your bios settings just yank the battery.
Explorer has caused a general protection fault in module kernel32.dll. I'm
sick of Winblows!

Thanks, Adam.

That says the battery is okay. I have been installing new stuff
like made here, but no kernel changes or anything I can think of
that might affect writing to the clock.
The shutdown failure leaves the keyboard inoperative except for
the speakup review keys. Init has been asked to switch to
runlevel 0, processes are sent the term signal and then the kill
signal, the message about writing time to the hardware clock
appears, then nothing. And ctrl-alt-del is ineffective too at
that point. My sound card remains alive, my internet connection
remain active, and in fact incoming mail continues to arrive (I
have some sound files announcing that fact).

Very strange.

  You can try
hwclock --systoch --debug
to see what's going on before it hangs. Parameter --test will make a
dry-run without changin anything.

  Another pssibility is to run
strace hwclock -w
and see whitch system call will hang.

Hi Ari,

When I run "hwclock --systohc" or "hwclock --systohc --test" it
still hangs, but when I run "hwclock --systohc --debug" it runs
to completion normally with lots of informative messages, but no
hint of any error or problem.

normally  you run
hwclock -u -w
(if your hardware clock keeps utc)
or hwclock -w
if the hardware clock stores local time (dual boot to wi ndows etc)

When I run "clock -w" the command just hangs. I can recover with
control-C. When I "cat /proc/driver/rtc" it says my battery is
okay. When I just run "clock" it also hangs. What can be
happening here?

I have recently installed gobs and gobs of new stuff, but have
not changed the kernel or added or subtracted any modules. The
only new daemon that is running is "libsafe" and I guess that
would be my first suspect.

I normally shut this system down over night but without a clean
shutdown I am obliged to just hit the big switch without being
assured all the steps are complete.

Maybe your hwclock binary is corrupt?  One thing to try since you said you
are using Slackware is to reinstall the util-linux package.  This contains
several essential utilities including hwclock.  I'd give that a shot.  If
that fails, remove libsafe and try again to use hwclock.  Good luck.

Hi Adam,

I reinstalled util-linux and removed libsafe and clock still
hangs. Have not tried shutting down, but I assume if clock hangs,
my shutdown script will hang too.

This gets curiouser and curiouser.
