Because flite_time is really composed of pre-recorded words while the actual
flite is a true synthesizer. Thus, flite_time sounds better, but can only
say a limited number of words which are pre-recorded.

If you read the README that comes with flite, you will find your answer.

I looked at the README in the tar.gz file of the flite source, and I cannot
find anything about the 16k voices, any ideas?

Sure. Try:

grep 16 README

It's certainly in there. Whether those specific references answer your
question--well I don't remember the question.

Wasn't it something about voice quality in flite? So:

grep -i quality README

Weren't you asking something about why there are different flite voices?
I guess I think the README addresses that.

Sure. Try:

grep 16 README

It's certainly in there. Whether those specific references satisfy your
question--well, that's a different matter, I suppose.

There are several references to diffrerent voices throughout the README,
both from the technical and descriptive perspective. Do:

grep -i quality README

for the latter.

Weren't you asking something about why there are different flite voices?
I guess I think the README addresses that.
