There is a line of data at the very top of the message text screen both in
Mutt and in Pine. Yet, when I leave the index screen in Pine to view the
message text, this line is not read automatically. In mutt, on the other
hand, it is read automatically. I find this mega annoying. Is there
something I can do to silence this line automatically--or just keep it
from being there in mutt? If I can't get over this hump, I will never use
mutt. It's far more annoying than the char set messages Pine puts up.

Add the line
unset help
to your .muttrc. This will get rid of that message on the scren.

You can always press ? (question mark) for a much more detailed list of
commands anyway.

I also have
ignore *
in .muttrc to remove all headers from the messages by default. This is
okay, because if I want to read them, I simply press h to toggle headers.

Thanks, Chris. That was easy! <grin>

This reply comes to you via mutt, which is beginning to act like something I could get used to and like a lot.

Matter o' fact, there is.

In your .muttrc, put a line that says
set help=no
