the speakup install

			Hey guys.  OK forgive me for asking this question, but how to you 
install this softwhere?
I would guess you have to have sighted assistance with the install of linux 
and then you go from there?

Hi Jed:
No sir.
Actually the speakup modified Red Hat distribution for which I am 
eternally greatful to Bill and Janina for maintaining and making 
available to everyone doesn't work the way you've guessed, it's exactly 
the opposite.
It is designed such that a blind person can install Red Hat him or herself 
without assistance from a sighted person of any kind. 
The installation is quite strait forward and Janina has put a great deal 
of work into writing a wonderful howto for all to refer too so you will 
likely find it very beneficial to read this document before you install 
and if you get stuck of course you can always call on Bill who is very 
helpful to newbies such as you and I from my experience in corresponding 
with im via email and speaking to him on the telephone.
It has been my experience from reading Janina's howto which you can find 
on Speakup's web site that it will probably answer many of the questions 
you will have, however; if it doesn't answer something of course write to 
this list and or blinux-newbie@braille.uwo.ca if you subscribe to that 
list as well.

anyone tried an alpha machine with speakup

HI all.  had someone offer to give me a couple of alpha boxes to play with.
I know basically nothing about alpha systems and want to learn.  I know
there are linux distros which will run on an alpha box.  wonder if I can
compile speakup into any of these from source code?

wonder if the hardware designations are the same like for the serial ports
and such.  any got any reading suggestions for an intro to alpha machines
how they work and such.

I have one, courtessy of Kirk and Frank's technical assistance.
Mine did talk once, but doesn't at this time.

I would go for it, were I you. What's to lose? They're nice
machines, and if there are more to be had than you want to take,
I'll take one too.

Hi, Jed:

No, you do not need sighted assistance in many cases. I would go
further and say you almost certainly don't need sighted
assistance if you're dedicating a machine entirely to Linux.

And, if you backup before you start and are very careful, you can
repartition without sighted assistance and get a dual booting
system.
