Hi.
I am installing a temperary verson of linux on an old 486 box. To Get linux from the winblows machine to the 486, I need to install a CDrom. I hooked it to the same ribbon as the hd since there was room, but it won't boot with the cdrom on the controler. How do I tell the hd to be master and cdrom to be slave?

Hi Alex. Ask Kerry to confirm this, but you might want to try setting the jumpers on the hd and the Cdrom. Am I right in thinking this? If he is on ide0, just set the hd to master and cdrom to slave.

You need to set a jumper on the hard drive as master (I've also seen some older drives where there was a master with slave option, use that if your drive has such a setting). You also need to set your cd-rom drive's jumper to slave. Hth.

ok, just to add to this, you'll need to check your cmos/bios setings to
ensure that your drives are being detected correctly.
it's not just a matter of setting the jumpers and hoping for the best.
this is where alot of people go wrong.
if possible put the cdrom on a seperate ide controler and I personally
would set it as secondary master. I will stand to be corrected on this but
if that doesn't work, slave it to your hard drive as either a primary
slave on the primary ide controler or as a secondary slave on the
secondary ide controler.
please feel free to correct me anyone as I don't always get things right.

Yeah, he should look at the bios first. However, my intention was to get the jumpers set first, see if it works as is, then if not, yes, do check the bios. I avoided the secondary controller option, because most 486 machines I've seen had to ide ports, that were in fact the one and only controller. So, I didn't want to totally confuse him, if this happened to be the case with his motherboard.

Can anyone explain exactly what PDF is. Most importantly, how it relates to
postscript? My under standing is that it is a data format, optimized for
representing documents. It is a binary format, and not only stores the
document text, but font info, formatting info, links, bookmarks, and other
objects like images and sound. It does include security/encryption
provisions. Can anyone be more complete? I'm trying to get a handle on
accessibility and understand more about the relationship between postscript
and PDF.

PDF stands for "portable document format." What it boils down to is that
it is a way for a publisher to make a document that looks the same
everywhere. (This is a sighted kind of thing.) It doesn't matter what kind
of system or printer you are using. The appearance of a document is the
same up to the resoolution of the device. It has become very popular for
for electronic rendition of forms. This way though the print quality
itself may vary, the layout will not. The form will be the same number of
pages regardless of the end user.
This is not optimim for blind and low vision people.

PDF is a proprietary postscript implementation. That means that its roots
are in printing. It's great for that. It's a way of sending relatively
small files across the net that print on almost any printer on almost any
kind of computer and almost always come out looking the same. Really cool
for people who are into printing and reading paper.
Of course, Adobe, the company that sells PDF tools has been a very smart
marketer. For example, it sells its scanning software to Federal agencies
as a way for them to get all their paper files into computer files that
can be published online. An agency like the Federal Communications
Commission gets a lot of paper that they want to publish on the net. So,
they use Adobe's scanning software to scan all that paper into pdf files
that they post on the web. If you ever look at an OCR rendition of some of
these documents, you can quickly discern how poorly this translates into
text that we, as blind users, need in order to read these documents. But,
it prints looking about the same as the paper the FCC got in the mail.

I've posted on this before but here we go again:
With the connectors of the cdrom towards you you have:
power on the right, 4-pin.
IDE ribbon connector 40-pin
then a jumper block then redbook audio then digital out and mode jumpers working your way to the left.
The jumper pins closed to the 40-pin ribbon cable is master,
the next set are slave and the next set are cable select.
If there is a secondary ide controller put the cdrom on that since
some hard drives have different jumperings for single drive
and drive with slave especially western digital.
Otherwise cdrom as slave is on the center of the set of 3 jumpers next to the ribbon.

jumpers don't have any of those jumper things on them. They just are three
sets of 2 pins.

There should be a jumper on there otherwise the cdrom
probably defaults to slave or cable select.
Hard drives differ so it depends on make
and model so if you give me those I might be able
to help.

Hi Alex.
Just curious if you know the manufacturer of this cd-rom and its model
number and if you could send it along.
This may help in one of us or yourself consulting the manufacturers
regarding the drive's default behaviour as it seems that it is jumperless.
Also, how old approximately is it, and what speed is it, as you probably
know, there are less and less certainties with regard to cd-roms when you
get into 1x, 2x, and 4x teritory or even a bit later.
I would second Kerry's suggestion regarding that it probably defaults to
either slave or cable select if it is without jumpers.
I feel however that if we had more info on the drive, I.E., model and
manufacturer as mentioned above that this would help us a great deal.
I should close with a bit of a disclaimer of sorts, despite the fact I have
loads of hardware experience in respect to DOS and Windows environments I
am a linux newbie in the wirse way though I am chomping at the bit.

Hi Ed.
I'm usually good with hardware, but this is anoying. The cdrom is a Mitsumi
4x dated 1995. The hard drive is a Maxtor 240 mb drive dated 1993. The
cdrom has jumper pins on the back labeled cable sellect, slave and master.
I pulled the actual thing that you move on the jumpers of an old 1x. I set
the jumpers at slave on the cdrom and am leaving the hd alone since it
doesn't have labeled jumpers.

Hi Alex.
I worked on a similar configured machine as the one you have with mitsumi
cd-rom and maxster hd from around the generation you have and indeed the
cd-rom had jumpers as yours does and the small maxster in my case which was
400 mb didn't.
So, the hd will go to master and the cdr-rom to slave as you've set the
cd-rom jumper that way.
I know that some of those mitsumi's need drivers under dos so I am not
sure if a geniric ide cd-rom driver from a Linux boot disk will work to
mount it or you will need a custom boot image for your Mitsumi.
Others may have better feedback to offer as they have more direct Linux
experience than I do.

So, I got the jumpers set. What do I set in the bios? I don't even know the
key to get into the setup program. I just yank out the hd and hope that'll

Set bios to primary slave auto or cdrom. If it is award or ami bios use
the delette key to get into bios.

You will want to go to the maxtor site and get a tech/spech sheet on your
drive. I have a couple of old maxtor drives and I know what you mean about
the jumpers not being labeled as ma/sl/cs. On the spec/tech sheet it will
tell how to set the jumpers on the primary HD so it can work whith a slave
drive conected to the same ribbon. Just a passing thought, did you check to
see in bios whether or not the primary slave drive selection was enabled or
set to auto or not? Some C D rom drives have a proprietary interface that
connects to a sound card only. It may or may not have a 40 pin conecter but
it may or may not be IDE. Usually these c d roms came bundled whith a sound
card. This may be what kind of c d rom you have. Can you get the model
number off of it?

Set the jumpers on the hd and cdrom.The hd should be set to master, and the
cdrom set to slave. You might need sighted help finding the right jumpers.

Usually the jumpers will be labeled m a for master and s l for slave and c
s for cable select. Some hard drives arent labeled like this, instead they
are labeled as jmp50 etc. The hard drive in this computer is the origenal?
It would boot OK before you tried installing the c d rom?
Whear did you get the c d rom from? Did it come out of a known working
computer?

It came out of a stack of unused drives wich had all been tested and worked
Ok. The hd is the original and boots dos 6 when the cdrom isn't connected.

Yes, and it is really slow and clumsy. The reader itself is a pain, and the
"accessibility features" are just structure tags, which should be part of
any good electronic document these days. I believe the real reaon for the
existance of PDF is copyright protection. The PDF format does include
digital rights management components and encryption software.

Well worth? Are you kidding? Even on Windows you'd do much better with the
Elcom software and the registry hack published on the Adobe remedies page.
