Juan:

Go to my FTP site; takes about 2.5 hours per disk there; not great, but
better than 10-15 hours per:

ftp.jamsite.us/linux

John

You can purchase a four disk CD ROM set of the Speakup Modified Fedora Distribution from Cheap Bytes at the following URL:

http://cart.cheapbytes.com/cgi-bin/cart/0070011139.html

It might be worth the $9 to avoid all the agravation of slow downloads.

Hi Janina,

I haven't gotten a response to my last email yet ... I would love to be able
to offer a mirror, so let's work it out.

Take care,

Hi all,
i'm having a problem and I'm not sure whether I'm hosed or if there's a way
to continue without redownloading everything.

After downloading the majority of FC3 from the site John has so kindly made
available, I thought I was ready to start my install. However, before I
knew about John's site, I downloaded some of the isos from linux-speakup,
and I don't remember now which isos I got from which site. At the time, I
assumed they were the same version.

At any rate, after I burned my disks, the first problem I noticed was that
for some reason, my disk 1 wasn't bootable. I then burned the boot.iso
image from that disk, which booted fine. I thought I was off and running,
the install asked me all of its questions and began chugging along on disk
1. However, it then asked for disk 2. I put in what should have been disk
2 and was told "wrong cd-rom".

So, now what? I don't know if the isos on John's site are a different
version, or if one of the disk 2 isos is really not disk 2, or if I got a
bad download of something... grumble!

Is there a way to identify the disks and/or versions by looking at the
directories?

Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi, Sina:

I hope they come through. 20 Gb isn't that much in today's on line
world.

I think it useful if we have several options, so I hope that both your
North Carolina site and the Canadian site I'm working on will mirror
Speakup. But, I'm also very pleased that Cheap Bytes is now an option
for anyone who can't, or doesn't want to download the Speakup Modified
Fedora for whatever reason. Getting 4 disks in the mail for around $10
USD just isn't that bad. To my mind, it's great to give people options.
We're beginning to have a few more options, and that's a good thing.

Unfortunately, this problem you've stumbled into is all too common,
especially for people installing for the first time.

If you already have Linux, you can run what's called an md5sum check on
the downloaded image files, and also on your burned disks. This is the
only sure way to tell you haven't mixed versions--and it's extremely
important not to mix versions as you've now discovered.

If you can't run md5sum, for example because you only have Windows now,
you can certainly look at the iso file byte size and date stamps. That
should indicate whether or not you've mixed versions.

I'm very sorry, but you'll need to get a complete set in order to
install successfully.

Hi Janina,

Sigh. I take it no progress has been made on the mirror yet right? I was
planning on getting this done this weekend but at this point, the download
speeds being what they are, I'm not sure if that's possible any longer.

Thanks

Interesting, The date stamps for my isos are as follows: It would seem to
me like they should all be of the same version:

FC3-i386-disc1.iso 645,386 KB Undisker ISO image 2/24/2005 9:30 PM
FC3-i386-disc2.iso 653,208 KB Undisker ISO image 2/24/2005 10:37 AM
FC3-i386-disc3.iso 652,144 KB Undisker ISO image 2/25/2005 3:22 AM
FC3-i386-disc4.iso 405,060 KB Undisker ISO image 2/25/2005 4:57 AM

You can always download an md5 sum for windows ... That would immediately
clear up any ocnfusion.

Take care,

Hi Al:

Well, your post below has revealed one thing to me; i.e., that it is the
"receiving" computer which furnishes the time and date stamps. My time and
date stamps vary more significantly than yours do because the entire
exercise of retrieving the 02/19/2005 images was necessarily spread out over
forty plus hours, given the 10K-12K download speed I was dealing with.
However, this I can tell you; the images I downloaded were all date-stamped
02/19/2005, with times between 4:15 a.m. and 4:22 a.m.; hence, they are all
from the same set.

If you want to go through the exercise of downloading them all again from my
site, you're certainly welcome, though that exercise will take you 10-12
hours, and will also, like as not, necessitate your interrupting sleep to
start successive iso image downloads. However, if you begun now, you'd be
able to install tomorrow. Oh, wait, I just now remember what Sena has
written, so, if you're not that windows averse (and have access to a windows
box), you can do a check sum to see what's going on.

If you do download all the disks again from my site and experience the same
problem, please let me know as this would mean that I don't have a
legitimate or functioning set; something I need to know if in fact that is
the case.

As I'm leaving for an overnight social engagement, don't expect any further
emails from me for the next sixteen hours or so.

John

Hi john,

Again, thanks very much for posting these and allowing those of us on the
list access to them. At this point though, I think I'm going to download
the regular FC3 isos and do a BRLTTY install. I'll worry about speakup
after the fact. At this point, I think this will be the quickest solution.

If you get a chance though, you might want to check your disk 1 image, as
there seems to be a problem in that it isn't bootable for some reason. As I
said, I downloaded several images from your site and several from the main
ftp site. However, the sum of disk1 didn't match the one on the main ftp so
I'm assuming I got that one from you.
The sum of the one i have that isn't booting is:
d016692cfde7456c6ca021b879833903

Thanks again,

--Al

Al:

Am still here, courtesy of DC's paratransit, though they're not all that
late yet, <smile>.

Okay, big-time thanks for this report. Assuming that the 02/19/2005
iteration of disk 1 is still available, I'll start that download now, and
let it take its sweet time while I'm out partying, <smile again.!

I seem to recall that there were posts some time back on the list
indicating that disc1 of fc3 didn't boot on some machines, and did
boot on others. So, it maybe that there's nothing wrong with John's
images, and your machine may be one of those that won't boot the first
disc. Perhaps someone using fc3 who posted on this earlier, or knows
something about the problem will clarify this.

Interesting. What I know for sure based on sighted assistance is that if I
attempt to boot disk 1, the text "boot from CD" flashes for a few seconds,
and then the system falls back to booting Windows. My first thought was
that my boot sequence was messed up, but the boot.iso works just fine.

Weird.

If I have the same problem with disk 1 of the regular set, maybe I'll try
booting it from the other rom on this machine to see if it makes a
difference.

Oh, we have progress. Indeed we do.

We just don't have a conclusion, and therefore no mirror on line yet.

Is there a md5sum for Windows? I should add that to the HOWTO. Last time
I looked, which I admit was quite some time ago, the only md5sum
involved installing cygwin.

Gregory is correct. There are systems which boot disk one, and others
which cannot boot from disk one. The solution is to create a disk
expressly for the purpose of booting. To create this boot disk, use the
iso image under images/boot.iso on the first disk.

Second point: John, please run an md5sum check on the images at jamsite.

md5sum -c MD5SUM

Hi Janina,

I'll need to track down where I got it exactly: I've basically done
everything I could do get all the linux tools on windows, but I'm not
terribly fond of cygwin.

It does say that it's from gnu.org, but I'm not sure how much that helps.

Take care,
Sina

Is there a md5sum for Windows? I should add that to the HOWTO. Last time I
looked, which I admit was quite some time ago, the only md5sum involved
installing cygwin.

Hi Janina,

I found mine by googling for it. The one I used is at:
http://www.pc-tools.net/win32/md5sums/

There are others as well.

Cygwin has its usefulness, but installing it just to get md5sum would be
something like using a blow torch to roast a marshmellow. So, we don't
talk about cygwin in the installation HOWTO.

Cool, and thank you.

I'll add this to the next release of the HOWTO.

Thanks!
