Hello, list. I just recently downloaded Red Hat 7.2, and burned it to cd's.
However, I now have a problem. After I installed Red Hat rrestarted, and
loads into x. How do I get out of x, and back into bash, or install Red Hat
without going into x after install?
Also can someone fill me on how do I know some options are being installed
and not installed? I've found the setup of 7.2 quite hard compared to 7.1,
but I'm sure someone out there has done this without much problems.
Any tips and tricks would be helpful.

In previous versions the way arround the X is to not have a mouse plugged
in when installing. Alternately, if you can telnet into the working box
change to root and run the setup program. You want the computer to start
into run level 3.

if your inittab is set up like slackware's (it just might be) there's one
text console open on tty6 as a workaround to a bug in init, and also a nice
failsafe if something happens to X.
so...
hit control-alt F6, and see if you get a console, if so, log in as root and
fix your inittab. (it's /etc/inittab, and pretty self-explanitory)

Right, but if you've got XDM, KDM, or GDM running it'll start X right back up
after that.

Actually, Georgina control+alt+back space only works when you have a run
level 3.Red Hat is logging in with kdm, and I was hoping to try something
else.

Thanks I'll be sure to try alt+control+f6 the next time I install. I had a
sighted family member fix the inittab for me so I could go ahead and use
Speakup as normal without being launched into x.

Actually you might try ctrl-alt-f7 or higher. If memory serves correctly,
the first 6 are going to be X, then the next six will be your
"normal" terminals.

I don't know for Redhat, but on Slackware, 1 is a text console
(non-interactive) that spews out status messages from X, 2 is the X screen
itself, 3 through 5 are nothing, and 6 is a login prompt
Redhat is probably different though

Just hit ctrl-alt-f1. The X window will disappear <poof>. You'll be
at a normal console login prompt. Log in and edit /etc/inittab. On line
18, you'll find a line that says: id:5:initdefault:
Change the 5 to 3. For good measure, after saving the file, type: telinit
3. That will shut down X. I don't recall the package selection screen
being different between rh7.1 and rh7.2.

telinit 3 would be required to kill X anyway :)
actually you'll want to type
init Q;init 3
after editing inittab, that tells init to reload its configuration, then
switch to runlevel 3
