Hello list,
I just moved my linux system into my bedrom, wooo! :)
Well, I'm using it as a stario a bit, because 98 and winamp, well, its not a nice picture...
Anyway, I've got a question.
Is there a program that will play mp3, and ogg files?
If not, is there a program that will play just ogg?
I can convert all my music to ogg if I have to.
I've got mpg321 at the moment, so even an ogg to mp3 converter would work, just as long as it does that. :)
Next, I heard something on another list about being able to hook up speakup to run as a software-based reader.
Any documentation on this?
I'd really appriciate the help; I'm trying to convert totally to linux (yay).
Thanks,
Tyler Littlefield

Sox will play both ogg and mp3. But I've had the best luck with
mplayer, which allows you to skip backward and forward, shuffle and a
lot of other nice things and plays ogg, mp3 and a host of other file
formats out of the box. Depending on the distro you're running, it
should be fairly to install mplayer on your box.
HTH,
Lorenzo

Yes, mplayer supports many different codecs, its even can
play windows formats. Download page is here:
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html
I usually install the binary codecs first then build it from
source but I see fedora rpms there also. You need to
install the binary codecs first then install the program.
Mplayer is actually a movie player, it can play all sorts
of audio formats:
MPEG layer 1, 2, and 3 (MP3) audio
AC3/A52 (Dolby Digital) audio (software or SP/DIF)
AAC (MPEG-4 audio)
WMA (DivX Audio) v1, v2
WMA 9 (WMAv3), Voxware audio, ACELP.net etc (using x86 DLLs)
RealAudio: COOK, SIPRO, ATRAC3 (using Real libraries)
RealAudio: DNET and older codecs
QuickTime: Qclp, Q-Design QDMC/QDM2, MACE 3/6 (using QT libraries), ALAC
Ogg Vorbis audio
VIVO audio (g723, Vivo Siren) (using x86 DLL)
alaw/ulaw, (ms)gsm, pcm, *adpcm and other simple old audio formats
All of those plus a bunch of video formats also!
See the supported list here

Hey, has anyone figured out a way to play protected files with mplayer?
I'm thinking particularly of those protected WMA files. Doubt anything
could come of Audible content but protected WMA'a and oh, the Itunes
stuff also. I haven't heard anything so far.
