Hi everyone. I have a question about internet access.
I have dsl and I just love it. However, if I am away from home and need
to check my email what other access modes to the internet might be
available. Right now I have another dial up account so it wouldn't be a
problem for me but if someone needs to access sometimes just for email, it
seems silly to have to keep an isp if you might only use it a few times a
year. Has some company addressed that problem?

... some ISP's allow you a certain amount of dial up access in addition to
your dsl connection as part of your package. for example the isp I'm with
allows me 10 hours of dial up access to my account at know additional
charge as part of my package.

Check with your ISP. Some providers allow you a certin amount of dial up
time with your dsl account for things such as this. Also, look in to some of
the free dial up services out there.

good luck with the free dial-up services and linux. I tried them last summer
after the blackout, thinking that if we ever lost power for an extended
amount of time and my isp went out because they're too stupid to get ups's
and I was on the generator here I could dial in to an isp. But it turns out
that most require a special dialer so they can display adds and spy on you.
with address.com's service I did get as far as getting an ip via dhcp but
that's it.

Another option to consider is that many ISPs have web access
to your email and many others allow telnet access to get
your email.
Either way you could get your email from any public library
with public access. Many libraries now have accessable
computers, all are required to have them, but some are a bit
slower in getting them setup.
Same would hold true for college and university libraries.

I am probably going to get you into trouble for suggesting this but it's
a thought,
why not set up a dialin server for you on your linux box and have all
yer mail collected for you by said linux box
you could possibly access it with either pop3 or imap whichever you find
easiest to use.

Hello
That is what I've done for myself when I go on vacation. I setup my linux
machine using mgetty to look specifically for my cell phone number and pass
all others to voice mail, by not answering it. Then I just use like you
would use a dial-in shell, PPP is harder to configure or at least I never
got internet access to work. I got a connection but couldn't get an IP.. It
is a really cool thing to do if you can do it.

If you were in a public library then you could just telnet
to a shell account, or access the web page with the browser
to get your mail.
You would not want to dial your local number as that would
be long distance.

Yes to all questions, assuming you had your computer and modem, and
only had access to a phone line.
As Ron pointed out, you wouldn't want to do something like this if you
were somewhere where you had a network connection (not requiring a
modem) to the web.

mail will allow for those times that you want to check your mail from a

I am an earthlink subscriber in the U.S. With them my email userid and
password allows me to dial-in. I have a cable modem btw. Their site
indicates that the same applies for their DSL users.
