His name is Bill, and knowing he helped you with the installation
helps explain what you have and what might be going wrong.
Odds are that your sound is muted. It is also possible that
running the sndconfig script mucked something up. Never fear,
between Bill and the rest of us on this list we'll get this
untangled for you.
Did you and Bill edit your modules.conf?

Bill did help edit the modules.conf file.
if I format a blank floppy on my dos box, then
mount /dev/floppy
can I use the cp command to copy my modules.conf to a floppy? If this will
work, I can attach it in a message. My linux machine doesn't have
functioning mail, because it's on an ip internal to my router. the linux
machine has an ip of 10.x.x.x, so it can't receive mail, and I haven't
btohered to configure sendmail. If I can copy the file to a flopy, I'll
attach it to my next message.

they use alot of hacks to get the access. The problem with that approach
is that it only deals with a particular situation rather than estanlishing
something a screen reader can query and get an answer to in many
situations. What a horrable sentence. Sorry, in a rush.

I'm a very confused linux newby, but hope someone can help.
When I look at my modules.conf file in the /etc directory, the only lines
for sound-related things I appear to see are for my ess1888 sound chips. I
can't play mp3s on my machine, and if I run the program used to configure
sound, I can pick the irq, and interrupt, I can hear the sample sound, but
the program always claims irq5 is busy.
I noticed upon startup that near the beginning of the boot proc4esss, the
statement
"loading sb sound module" is spoken, and the ess stuff is loaded much later.
I wondered if this is the same SB of sound blaster fame, and if so, does
anyone know why this is loading when I don't see a reference to it accept as
an alias in my modules.conf setup?
Is there a comment charactor I could use in linux to comment out the 1888
lines, and see what happens?
the reason I ask all this is that when I move my cursor arround in speakup,
I hear little blips of ascending pitch from my speakers as I run into new
lines.
also, how do I make alsasound not run automatically? I want to troubleshoot
sound before complicating things. Once I get things working, how do I
restart alsasound automaticaly each time my pc starts?
Sorry for al the questions, but I really hope someone can help

The beeps from your speaker when you arrow around the screen
using Speakup's screen review features are not from your sound
card.

THis says to me that at some level, sound is working.

Hi
If I understand correctly, you've installed alsa and you have no output.
When you installed the drivers, it state that all the settings were
muted and that you'd need some mixer program to make your desired
settings. You could get some sample asound files from speakup but it
depends upon what card, and what version of alsa. The following
commands will get some sound.
amixer set Master 90% on
amixer set PCM 90% on
amixer | more
The above command will display the current settings of your available
devices. From which you can use 'amixer set <simple mixer control>
<value>
You'll have to read up on alsactl to store and restore.

Understood. The sample played from the sound configuration
program does come from your sound card. The Speakup beeps do not.
What distribution are you running? You neglected to say, and
without that datum it's hard to advise you.

sorry I did the redhat 7.3 talking install.
let me ask these questions differently.
1. a sound module called sb is being loaded early on in my startup process.
Is this a generic module for the sound blaster, or unrelated. Would it make
sense for me to remove references to the 1888 sound chips from my
modules.conf and see if I ccan play an mp3, or a wav?

OK, this is helpful.
Did you say also that you installed ALSA somehow? Did you use the
ALSA rpms to do that?
I ask because the sndconfig script provided by Red Hat configures
for OSS and not for ALSA.
Still, I would do the following:
Try playing a sound. Do:
locate .wav
which will find whatever wav files are on your hard disk. Select
one and do:
play [filename]
If you hear sound, you know that either OSS or ALSA are working.
If you hear nothing, or if it's too loud, or not loud enough, do:
aumix -q |more 2>&1
This will show current sound configuration parameters like
volume. Examine the output. Is volume reasonably high? If not,
adjust as needed. There are aumix commands to use.
By the way, the "|more 2>&1" part keeps the report from scrolling
off screen. You probably need it, but you may not need it
depending on your display characteristics.
Once you have the settings as you like them, save them. You will
see the commands for saving to a file, and the command for
loading from a file with:
aumix -h |more 2>&1
Let's go that far before talking about ALSA specifics.

I will try your suggestions, but to answer your questions, I used an rpm
which I found on the speakup site. I was helped to install it by the guy
who lives in colorado and helps newbies install redhat should they need it.
I'm sorry I don't remember his name.
