Unloading Linux

[Rodney]

Hi all.
 
I was having trouble installing Slackware Linux on a computer so I tried
it on my development hard drive.  I was going to reinstall Windows on it
anyway so I tested the Slackware install and all went well.  But now I
have to remove Linux and reinstall Windows 98 SE.
 
The problem is that even though I repartitioned the hard drive and
reformatted it with my windows startup disk, the LILO menu still
appears.
 
I assume the menu is written on the boot sector of the hard drive and my
reformatting does not erase it.
 
Can anyone tell me how to totally clear my hard drive so I can do a
fresh install of a different OS?

Type:
fdisk/mbr
from ms-dos mode or a boot disk and this'll clear your boot record.
ocasionally in some circumstances you will also need to set the active
partition.

Boot from a windows startup disk and run the following command multiple
times (5 or 6):
fdisk /mbr

For some strange reason the m$ utilities for this kind of thing fail to
overwrite the boot block. I wonder if this is related to the fact that the
partition table for m$ ignores the first 500 bytes or so of the
partition. At any rate, this will resolve your problem.

I was able to change drives, and use the 'fdisk /mbr' command to clear
LILO from the master boot record.

Hi,

	It appears that you installed Lilo on your MBR (Master Boot Record). You can use the M$ fdisk program to restore a stock MBR thus:

	'fdisk /mbr'

Hi, to remove lilo you must insert your Windows boot disk, and type

fdisk /mbr

This will restore the mbr to a Windows fs.

you need to reset the master boot record on your windows drive, note this *may* make windows unbootable. 

at a dos prompt 

fdisk /mbr

will remove lilo fro mthe  boot record.

After reading this same response, oh... quite a few times now, I have to
wonder if anyone reads their e-mail all the way through before responding to
it.  That is, after all, good practice on a list.  You read all of the
message posted to the list so the same thing doesn't get repeated ten times
over.  Of course, I'll never forget fdisk /mbr now...

Yes, use the dos emulator, or create a bash alias for the commands you want
changed to be like dos.
For example if you put the following line in /etc/bashrc

alias dir='ls'

When you typed dir it would run the ls command.

Yes, there are two things about our readers you need to know, one they
don't know how to read to the end of a thread to see if it has been
answered or they just like to see themselves in print. Two, they can't
resist pulling in previous postings with 7,000 lines just so they can
say "yeah, me too!".  Oh, and there's a third thing, they don't know
how to turn off html and just use plain text in their mail messages.
It is quite frustrating to read an answer posted by 15 people with the
same result.  I like to tell myself they just haven't learned yet; but
some folks have been doing the exact same behaviour for two years.  Oh
well, maybe they're slow learners.

Sounds like just about any list I've run...

So about this HTML e-mail thing...  Has anyone thought of figuring out how
to preprocess HTML mail so it looks fine in pine?  I wonder if it could be
as simple as piping procmail through lynx or something.

Perhaps I'll have to work on that in my copious spare time... <smile>

You know, I use pine myself and don't see what it is that so many people
complain about. Occasionally I see a bunch of tags. Normally I just delete
and move on. Ocasionally I will wade through the tags for the message. I
think I have noticed it 5 or 6 times over last 6 months or so.

So my question is: what is different about the "debainized" pine? (For
those not aware debian has one download the source and a patch that
combines to form a pine with differences that the docs indicate changes
locations for some things.)

It's really a pain in the neck! to get messages with interspersed dialogue
especially when you've already read the originator's message two messages
ago so you have to listen to the whol thing again! and again! and again! and
then figure out who said what.  Sighted persons can just use colors or
highlighting to set off the participants but we can't discern the difference
as easily.  Unfortuneately too, I have my original message set to be posted
and forget to cut it out but it's after my comments so with a screen reader
and pine, you just press spacebar to go to next page and you don't have to
listen to the junk at the end.  Yes it's sloppy but when I have a bunch of
mail to bullet through and sometimes I get over a hundred per day, laziness
sets in! big time ha!

I personally prefer it that people post what they have to say at the
beginning of the message and if one wanted to leave in what was said
previously for contextual purposes, then the reader can elect to go down
farther into the message and re-read anything which needs clarification and
one doesn't have to go and hunt down the original message.

Sounds like a procmail script might help. One could have it kill any line 
that begins with punctuation. That would get most of the quoting 
automatically.

Warning:
The debug script sent out will not just remove the last traces of
linux. It will remove the last traces of everything. While it would be
possible to recover some files with the right product, it would become
expensive quickly. The script will erase the entire partition table of the
drive.

On a related note, I had a person lose ability to read an entire drive
when he prematurely hit enter on a line (or had mistyped can't recall for
sure). I was never able to repro the disaster, but think it is worth
noting. Use the script with care.

Hi, use fdisk. You can stick in your Windows dos bootdisk, type fdis, at 
the dos prompt, and then first delete any non-dos partitions, and then you 
should be ready to fdisk and create Windows partitions.

  Yah, fdisk is OK, For windows I used the maxblast to creat the
partissions.
