is there another list

Hi,

I have a few questions, but I fear that they are going off topic for speakup related questions.  Is there another list I should be posting these type questions too that is blink related?  Here are a few questions to give 
you an idea
how do you add a new user to the system? useradd or adduser username -p password
is there some scripts or text based programs that I can install to make admin tasks easier.  it seems debian had some nice text based menu driven utils that I don't seem to find in rh 7.1.

Hi all,

Well, if you liked Debian, why did you switch?  

To add a user in RH, I think it is still:  adduser   I started with
RH, but went to Debian after a tour with Slackware.  

As for linux questions being off-topic, don't worry about it.  We're
not hide-bound on this list.  So ask away.

Hello Ann and all,

Along these lines a friend has recommended debian linux and I wonder  if I
need to use or avoid certain hardware?  I plan to use an older Dell
pentium 166mhz with external 56k modem on com3, soundblaster compatible
card, andolder Sony 4x CDR drive.  Does this sound like hardwarethat will
work, and can I  still have win98 set up on a separate drive letter using
Partition Magic or similar utility under linux?

Hi all,

Welcome, Will, glad to see you here.  All the equipment sounds good.
The answer to your partitioning question is yes, it can be done.  Do
not, I pray thee, ask me for technical details; I am not a techie.
However, I can tell you that if you go to:

You will find the howtos.  There's a lot of stuff there on hardware,
what works, what doesn't.  Good luck.  Maybe somebody else on here can
help you with the technical end of things.

It should all work, including the out-dated cdr.
Yes, you can repartition your drive to have the other os and Linux.

Hi Jim.

Use linuxconf that should have been installed on to your machine when you
install red hat.

Linuxconf will allow you to create new users and groups.

jim have you tryed linuxconf? it works very well for the console but I'm
not sure that redhat has it. I think for memory it does

Yes, and it is not there, will see if it is a package I can install as I'm now up on the second hd with lilo as boot loader.

Hi Jim,
I too don't think there is a text-based linuxconf in Redhat 7.1.  There
was definitely a text-based version in 6.1 and 6.2.

LinuxConf is definite on RedHat 7.1.  My machine is currently running it.
RedHat 7.1 doesn't install it by default.

I no longer use linuxconf, though it is still tempting when there's 
something I don't quite know how to do myself. Problem for me was not the 
interface. I got used to the quirks of linuxconf's text interface readily 
enough. Problem was that it seems one cannot mix doing configuration by 
hand and doing it by linuxconf. Eventually, linuxconf just breaks if you 
do that. As is so commonly the case with these kinds of tools, one can 
only do what the tool supports. If you're willing to live with that, and I 
am not, you should be OK with linuxconf.

PS: You can even run linuxconf from lynx. You need to open linuxconf and 
specify that this kind of access is allowed--somewhere under misc, if 
memory serves. Thereafter, it's localhost:900.
