wine and speakup

Hi all,

 

I'm going to be getting a junker system in august, and the only reason that
I'm taking it is because the price, (free) is right.  I want to run Linux on
it as it's probably going to be the best os for the hardware that the
computer will have in it.  One of the things that I want to do is run an
echo link interface to the local ham radio repeater here in Muskegon.  On
the web site for echo link, the only mention of the software running with
Linux is by using wine.  Now I'm not the brightest bulb in the box, but I'm
thinking that wine is some sort of graphical program.  Is this the case, and
if it is, does speakup or any speech software for that matter read this
particular program at all?

Wine is an emulator of sorts which allows you to run windblows-based
programs. It does this by using freely (as in no cost) available dlls
that come with internet exploder. You do need x to use wine. The
reason I say it's an emulator of sorts, is because you don't install a
version of windows on it like you do on a virtual machine, wine is
windows, if that makes sense. The whole point of wine is to run
windows software, without having to install a copy of windows, and
worry about the licensing that doing so entails. You can find out more

Yes, Wine is a graphical program (a Windows emulator).  You might be
able to run a Window$ $creenreader under it; I honestly don't know.
A quick google search for "Echolink" "Linux" yielded the
following URL: http://cqinet.sourceforge.net.  This is a suite of
programs that are compatible with EchoLink, and it may be what you're
looking for.

Let's try this.  I wonder if it might just be possible for him to run
wine with gnome and orca, such a system comes already to go on ubuntu.
On the latest version, there might be a way for him to run it.  This
would be interesting to me as well.

There are a couple of solutions. I haven't tried this (I'm using IRLP
with EchoIRLP...worth checking out), but there's a repeater controller
software that includes Echolink node software. It's all command-line
stuff, and it actually looks pretty good:

Hello all,
Yesterday I come across a project called Wine which will let you run Windows applications under Linux. Hadn't time to read more about it will do that later today. But just wondering if anyone has tried it?

I haven't tried it myself, but I know people (sited ones) who have 
gotten some apps to work in it but it's pretty flaky.  An app that 
works in one version might break in the next.  No idea how a 
screenreader would like running under it but you might have problems 
there.  Also you need a working xwindows desktop running to use wine I 
believe...someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I've tried it a long time ago, and found the show stopper for me was
right when I tried to run the window-eyes setup program, wine just
crashed there at the beginning. When I brought this up on this list a
while ago, someone suggested just taking the already installed
window-eyes directory from my standard windows installation, and
trying to run wineyes with a hardware synth, (since the software
speech part is where the setup crashed), and see what
happens. However, I haven't ever gotten around to trying that.

No, you don't need a x desktop running, as long as you don't plan to
interact with the x session directly. Janina posted a way to do this a
while ago via running xv in /etc/inittab in response to my asking if
there was a way to do such a thing. Basically, this would start a x
session for you on a designated display, which you would then export
in your shell, so that programs such as wine can use it. Maybe Janina
will see this, and repost those instructions again, or if not, I think
I have that mail saved here somewhere, I can try to dig it up, and
repost it. It should also of course be in the list archives, but I
don't remember the thread, or the year it was posted.

Hello Greg,
Many thanks for your info!
Will install and see how it works for me. It was my thought as well to run a screen reader and see how it works.
The question is how one switch from Wine to something else in Linux. But to me it looks like it is run from a console so it shouldnt be any problems.
I am running latest Debian.

You'd switch from console to console the way you normally do, (left-alt-key
with the left and right arrow keys to move back and forward
respectively), since
you'd still be in the text run level, which is run level 2 under
debian.
