I just was wondering if anyone knows where I can find the lowest price
for a domain name. It seems that there is a fairly large corporation
who holds a monopoly on all the .com, .net and .org domains on the
internet, and they sell them to a bunch of resellers. The problem is
that the reseller that seems to have the lowest price I could find is
spending millions on advertizing, and therefore I would be paying more
than if they didn't advertize so much.

Does anyone know of anyone who can give me the closest to the wholesale
price for a domain name for 3 or more years? I am not looking to pay $9
or more a year to buy something from a reseller who advertises during
the Superbowl spending $30 million or more per spot.

Thanks for any help,
Lorenzo

Actually, there is probably no problem using ipowerweb, except that I
couldn't find where to just get a domain name. It looked like it was
trying to get me to setup a reseller account so I could have an online
store or something. I will take another look.

Thanks,
Lorenzo

Hi, I don't know who has best prices, but I have owned several domains
including
this one I am sending from, and this is a very competitive market these
days.
You should be able to own one for cheap! I only pay $7 a month to own this
domain, and that includes web hosting with 400MB disk space. There is
usually
an annual cost for registering the domain. You can actually buy domains
direct
from the registrars, but its super easy to get domain plus hosting from one
of the thousands of companies offering it. I think I paid an annual fee
of $15
to own the domain, then $7 a month for hosting that domain. It is
definitely
affordable!

Hi Hank,
Actually, godaddy is the one I was talking about who spends millions on
Superbowl adds and such. So call me cheap, but if they charge
$8.95/year and spend millions on Superbowl adds and podcast advertizing
I should be able to get a better price from a company who doesn't
bombard me with so many ads. Kinda like the onesuite thing. They can
offer the best phone card rates because they don't rely on mega
advertizing, so their overhead is low and the savings are passed along
to the customers. Also, I was highly unimpressed with Godaddy's
accessibility from text-based browsers when trying to register domains
through their system. Basically, it seems impossible, unless I missed
something somewhere. Links (l i n k s) seems not to be able to handle
the javascript even in the availability search, and elinks tells me
Javascript is disabled even when it's enabled.

Plus I think they still use visual verification and I refuse to do
business with anyone that requires me to use sight to see their stupid
pretty picture just to prove I'm a human being rather than a robitic
script. I have been personally using Directnic for years but they still
charge $15 per year. Good service though.

A lot of the built-in price is the quote extras unquote you get with
the domain name. If you don't want/need any extras, including
hosting or name resolution, then go daddy is like 7.95 or something
like that. I don't use them, I use info avenue, iaregistry.com, it's
8.95 (I think, it's been a while) and I host my own domains and
provide my own name resolution. info avenue has good tech support,
and is usually willing to work with you when email problems prevent
proper changing of domain information. This is the reason I went
with them, even though they're a dollar more. I don't need support
very often (once in the 3-4 years I've been there) but it sure is
nice to know it'll be there. I've jumped through hoops to get
support from internic, even to the point of paying to have stuff
pushed through immediately (which they charge ubnoxious amounts for)
and still not gotten results. I suggest avoiding them if you can.
At one point, I had nearly a dozen domains, and iaregistry.com worked
w/o a hitch for all of them, while it was a constant battle with
internic (not to mention rediculously expensive)
Bottom line is, use what works for you, and ignore the advertising.
