Hi. I'm new to Slackware so I'm probably just missing something. I
can't find any packages for festival. The Gnome-speech Slackware
package is compiled with support for the festival speech server, but I
don't have festival installed. Could someone please tell me where to
find it?
I don't have a braille display, so I can't try Slackware's Gnome 2.6
until I have a working gnome-speech.
Thanks in advance.

I don't think there are festival packages for slackware...I just went
ahead and built it from source and it worked fine.

I never tried Festival. I did Flite a while back and that is
available but dunno if flite is sufficient for Gnome speech or not.

No, flite isn't. Gnome-speech requires festival.

Is Festival available for use with Speakup and command-line apps like Pine
and LYNX or is it only available for use with desktop environments like Gnome?

Yes you can. What we do is to use the speech dispatcher discussed
extensively on previous messages on this list (see the archives).
Speech dispatcher can be configured to drive software synths like
software DECTalk, Festival and Flite. Then speakup is configured to
use sftsyn as its synthesizer of choice. You also need speechd-up to
go inbetween Speakup and the Speech Dispatcher. I realize this may
sound confusing but can be worked out and has actually worked pretty
well for me on a couple machines.

Hi Kenny,
As far as I am aware, the slackware cD doesn't come with the festival
software. I looked on linuxpackages.net, and it does not appear to be there
either. If people are interested, I could build them and make them available
on my ftp server.

Ok, I'll get them built and put them up soon. I'll also place them on
linuxpackages.net. It may take me a few hours because I've got to install a
clean Slackware 10.0 (as opposed to -current), and then I've got to figure
out how to compile the packages. Should be up some time today.

Cool, go for it. Even though people don't like the speech, it is
expected to be installed by at least 2 accessibility packages.
