Nope, it doesn't as of yet.
Only hardware synths are supported.

You choose the boot disk that coresponds to your synth and it SHOULD
detect automatically. I don't know about the current install, but some
iterations ago there were some people who had to specify the port. But
this was not common, and has been worked on. Best bet is to get it and try
it out. You will learn more in five minutes that way then five years of
reading the list.

Tommy's CD image for debian 2.2 I think has a CVS version of speakup. I
don't know how he handles the speech synth specification, but he must

maybe this sounds silly but can I install on to a computer that has never
had an os before or must it have had windows on it?

Hi:
Yes, you can install linux onto a clean system. In fact, this is the
easiest approach. You would have difficulty installing zipspeak on such a
system, but if you want a talking install, slackware, debian or redhat will
suit you fine.

You don't need to have any OS on the machine prior to installing
Linux. And you don't have to worry about lisensing.

of course you can.
all you need to do is make sure that you have either a linux native
partition or both linux native and linux swap partitions on your hard drive
or you will more than likely run in to problems during the install.
you can use either cfdisk or fdisk for this task.
if you want to partition a ide drive and you want the linux os to be on your
master drive, do, cfdisk /dev/hda or, fdisk /dev/hda
or for skuzzy do, cfdisk /dev/sda or fdisk /dev/ssda
then press n to create the new partition, then press t to get a list of
partition tables. you only need to worry about linux swap "type 82" and
linux native "type 83".
after you've configured your partitions to suit you, press shift+w to write
the partition table to the disk.
I've probably missed a few things along the way, but I'm sure that someone
else will pick up on it.

Actually what I do is specify the synth on the command line like:
linux speakup_synth=keyword
If you need to specify serial port setting you can do that also.
One thing that is different is that you'll have to go in to the setup
before you reboot is that you'll have to edit the append line that is
added to the lilo.conf.
Sorry there's not much documentation on the cd. Just wanted to hurry up
and get it out the door for people to test.

Actually the set of boot disks that are up on the speakup site now aren't
the ones that are used on the cd.
I'll have to seporate the disks out of the cd image so that the latest
ones with cvs version of speakup will be on the site and fix these module
problems people have been talking about.

No it doesn't.
Speakup comes up before the sound subsystem so until speakup
becomes modularized there is no possibility of software speech
at boot because the sound hardware is not alive yet.
