Debian equivalent

Debian equivalent

[Dan Murphy]

Can anyone tell me if there is a debian equivalent of /etc/rc.d/rc.local?
this is usually where you might store certain local settings in other
distros.
I want to use it to pass a few parameters to Speakup at boot time.

I had been using Slackware, but on this machine I installed Debian and
some things are different.

Nope, you've got to role your own. Chuck Hallenbeck posted a while
back a nice way of making your own equivalent of rc.local under
debian, which is working very nicely here on 2 machines. It's in the
list archives. If you can't find it, then I can pass on Chuck's post
to you privately, or maybe Chuck himself can do that.

Hi Dan,

Nope, no rc.local.  Here is what I did:

Go into /etc/init.d and create a script containing whatever you want to 
do in an rc.local. I called mine "mystartups" but I suppose you could 
even call it "rc.local" if you want. Remember that you do not yet have a 
reasonable path established when this script will execute.Give it 
execute permissions.

Next, also as root, run update-rc.d to add this script to your normal 
bootup scripts. You can specify which runlevels it should start in or 
stop in, or just use the Debian defaults, which will be okay. But you 
have to give it a priority, 99 will make it the last thing to execute on 
startup. You can check the update-rc.d man page for details, but as near 
as I can recall without checking, it might look like this:

update-rc.d mystartups defaults 99

You now have a bunch of other scripts in your varius runlevel 
directories of the form K99mystartups and S99mystartups which will kill 
or start the mystartups script as appropriate. Actually it doesn't make 
sense to kill such a script, it will just run it again anyway, unless 
within your script you check to see what parameter it was run with.

One more thing about using a script such as mystartups (or rc.local) to 
start your software speech.

Chances are that speech-dispatcher will already be running when this 
script executes, since it has its own startup script in /etc/init.d with 
a lower priority. But what I did in my script was to "renice -5" the 
already running copy.  It turns out that Debian has a very handy  
utility called "pidof" that returns the pid of a running program, so my 
command to change the priority of speech-dispatcher looks like this:

renice -5 `pidof speech-dispatcher`

and you are in business. Whatever script you use to manage your speakup 
speech output should be sure to run speechd-up with "nice 5" so that 
speech-dispatcher will always run with a slightly higher priority than a 
normal application, and speechd-up will always run with a slightly lower 
priority. Negative numbers here mean higher priority, positive numbers 
mean lower priority. I guess that is why they call it "nice-ness" The 
nicer it is, the lower the priority. The nastier it is, the higher the 
priority.

There is a speakwith script on my web site that you might like to take a 
look at. It assumes speech-dispatcher has already been run, but does 
everything else for you.

Actually, pidof isn't specific to debian, it's simply a symlink to
killall in most cases, which killall checks to see how it was
called. I notice though that debian's pidof is symlinked to killall5,
though there is no killall man page in chapter 5, and I'm not sure how
killall5 and killall differ, assuming that they do differ.

Just wondering though Chuck, what priority do you use for speechd-up?

plus numbers when doing nice or renice to set priorities.

Yes, I noticed that symlink think about pidof too, but I never noticed 
the availability of pidof while using Slackware, and several Fedora 
systems I help admin do not have it available either. It's a nice 
shortcut, saves messing with ps and all its options.

I was digging around in some old mail here and I need to make a slight
correction here.  My current version of Slackware (10.2) does have a
pidof command and it is symlinked inside the sysvinit package.  It is
linked to killall5.

I just looked on my slackware 10.1 box as root and found pidof to be
symlinked to killall5.  The date on the file was some time in 2005 and I
don't recall ever creating it myself.  I've recalled using the pidof
command various times in the past though.  It is located in /sbin so a
normal user wouldn't find it.

Hmm, I was probably creating it under an earlier version of slackware,
I'm fairly sure it wasn't 10.1 or later, however I do remember having
to create it under slackware by hand, and no, I wasn't logged in as a
normal user when looking for it that time in all the bin directories.

Somewhere out there on the internet deep in an archive is a message from me 
asking the same question.  What is the debian equivalent of the rc.local? 
I'm going to giveyou the same answer someone gave me and -- fair warning -- 
when I got this answer I would not accept it.

You don't need an rc.local and, in fact, it's better to not have one. 
Everything in your rc.local belongs somewhere else.

My initial reaction to the guy who told me that was "You are crazy". I 
argued with him about it. For instance, what about my fire wall script? 
What you can do, he pointed out, was trigger it in your ifup script so it 
runs only if you actually have a network connection.

that's just an example. 'm not  nearly the guru that this other guy was. So 
if you give me examples, I'm probably not going to be able to convince you. 
In fact, this other guy didn't convince me.  What happened was that i 
gradually figured out better ways to do things and eventually, the 
rc.local  I rigged up became empty.

The one thing I can tell you right away though is that to start daemons in 
debian, you put a script in /etc/init.d/ and then create symlinks to it in 
the directorys for  different run levels.  I did a quick google search for 
docs on starting services in debian. I'm not saying this is the best 
tutorial out there but it it looks pretty good:

Hi Dan,
I don't recall anyone ever gave you a satisfactory answer--excuse me if 
you have received one.
For almost an exact equivalent you could create a file in /etc/init.d and 
call it local.
Then with your favorite editor you could put in whatever commands you 
want.
Then you could issue the command:
update-rc.d local start 99 2 3 4 5 . stop 20 2 3 4 5 .
Pay attention to the output from update-rc.d. Remember to include the 
periods in the above command--presumably they tell the update-rc.d 
program when the start and stop actions end.
   :Now, I would strongly discourage putting firewall commands in rc.local. 
You want your firewall to execute before your eth0 or whatever comes up. 
So, go cd /etc.
mkdir firewall
cp your_firewall_script /etc/firewall
cd /etc/init.d
ln -s /etc/firewall/your_firewall_script firewall
update-rc.d firewall start 07 2 3 4 5 . stop 90  2 3 4 5 .
Notice the low sequence number for starting.

/etc/profile is executed each time a user logs in, so it is not the same 
as rc.local, which executes only on system startup, just once, no matter 
what happens later.
