I heard something about this on this list a long time ago, and never again.
If anyone uses the Braille Assistant or knows about how well it works from
personal experience please email me privately. I'm looking into it, but want
more then advertising. My email is

Hi, Jared,

I am using the Elba.

I like it a lot, but there are some limitations. You don't have access to
the whole linux system so you can't do stuff like compile your own
software. If it were a personal unit and not one for my job that would
upset me. But it has all the great features of linux like stability and in
this respect it's better than any notetaker I've played with. The braille
is beautiful. The machine is a bit big and klunky, but I like it anyway.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Please use this address:

I had heard that there is a code they can give you to unlock the full power
of the system.

Hi all,

There are two Elba users on this list who know what they are doing.
No, Liz, you have incorrect info. You can get a compiler for the
Elba, you just have to ask. You can get the root password too, you
just have to ask. Um, hate to say this, my friend, but I think there
is still, on the part of some people, a reluctance to believe that a
woman actually could know what to do with a compiler and a root
password for the Elba. Just be charming and kill him with kindness
and ask sweetly for what you want.

I don't have an Elba, wish I did, but am getting a
BN for my job. However, I did some considerable research on the Elba,
as well as talking to folks who use it. If I weren't having this BN
bought for me so that I could train others on it, I'd buy an Elba,
hands down!

Hi all,

According to David Pellisher, (sp) the guy at Sighted Electronics,
Elba is working with an outfit in Quebec, the same one that developed
the Victor Reader. According to the info I have, they will be getting
the same GPS stuff as will the Packmate. But apparently, this Quebec
outfit has to do FS's work first, and then they can deal with
Papenmeyer. Seems like an arsyversy way to operate since FS is so big
and their Packmate, wannabe computer, is so clumsy and idiotic, but
there 'tis.

I feel the same way. If the Elba had GPS now, there'd be no contest,
none! The BN has FTP, and Telnet, not this Activesync that the BN is
using. The Elba has USB and Wireless support too. Ah, well, PDI
says they're workin' on it.

Is there going to be a GPS for the note taker? I would probably get one over
a braille note if I could get a GPS, but until there is one its braille note
all the way.
