Dear listers:

I am enquiring on the kernal problems with slackware and speakup. Do you
know of any updates to theboot disks.
Thanks for your help on this.

What do you mean by an update, Bruce? The text.gz root disk is broken, so I
suggest using color.gz. It works just fine.

Dear Victor:

In regards to your question, I need a boot disk for Redhat and slackware
that will recognise newer com ports. What has been happening is that when I
try to load either redhat or slackware, the machine freezes after boot, and
does not speak. The reason for this could be that Speakup or the kernel
does not recognise machines with only 1 com and LPT port. Hope this throws
some light on the subject.

Hi, Bruce!
Are you sure that your synth is working fine? Usually, kernel with Speakup
would freeze the computer in case if it doesn't find any synthesizer and
doesn't receive any signals back from the serial port. If you are sure that
the cable on your synth is working fine, then try to pass speakup_ser
parameter to the kernel. You would type something like:

ramdisk speakup_ser=0

[or whatever port you are using]. Please make sure that the synthesizer you
are using is supported by Speakup.
Best,
Vic

The text.gz isn't broken as far as I can tell. I used it with 7.0. As
far as I can tell 7.1 works. At least that is what I know from others.

Um, from what I can remember for some reason the color.gz root disk seems to be broken and I think the one that is on the major ftp sites is broken so don't know what to tell you guys. The reason why I say this is because the root disk isn't modified to make the slackware install disks so must be something with the default ones.

I don't know if this works or not, but I wonder what would happen if you used the 7.0 root disk to install the system. Never tried it, but it might work.

Tommy.

Well, it didn't work with any of my machines. It would abort the installation
at the point where it had to start reading from the CDROM. It would say
something likea: "Slackware cannot access your source media device correctly".
COlor.gz didn't have any such problems.

VIc
