Hey all, I just wanted to write and see if anyone has any good
recommendations of a USB or PCI synth that works well with
speakup. I got a new dell, and was not blessed with having serial
ports on the motherboard. I'm gonna install Ubuntu 7.04 tomorrow, so
if no one can recommend a good synth that will work with speakup, can
someone point me in the right way of getting it up and running with
7.04? There are times when I'd rather work at the command line
rather than gui. Thanks in advance for all the help.
Guy
P.S. I guess I have a couple more questions after downloading and
burning the ISO. What is the best way to get firefox 3, and how do
you go about getting a spoken install with 7.04? Thanks again for
all the help.

Does the trippletalk not work with speakup yet? Now that I think about it,
does the new external dectalk work with speakup? I know the express does,
but that wasn't a USB synth.

Hiya,
I can't say for sure about Trippletalk, but the USB dectalk does NOT
work. However, software speech with Espeak, Speechd-up and
Speech-dispatcher is tolerable.
Thanks,
Zack.

They have Espeak already in there. I'm not sure why it has a British accent
to it though. It's a lot better than Festival.

Hi, You can always buy a serial card for a very cheap price at any
computer store and just pop it in like a sound card and it should work
fine.On Tue, 24 Apr 2007, Guy Schlosser wrote:

Not with Speakup it won't. Speakup probes the hardware directly, and if
the serial card's IO address and IRQ don't correspond to standard serial
ports, it won't be recognized.
