Hi all,
I was wondering, in GPL 2.0, we have a clause permitting the exception of
needing to provide source for called libraries, if they are part of the OS.
In Linux this probably isn't too much of a problem, but how does one go
about defining, part of the operating system, on other platforms? For
example, in Windows .... Is something like SAPI or DirectX, quote part of
the OS quote?
Thanks for any articles, clarifications, or other pointers as well.
I'm still googling and emailing other contacts, but I feel a lot better
hearing something like this from an actual person as opposed to someone's
blog, *grin*.
Take care,
Sina

Such a question probably only gets its answer in trials :)

I'd really hope that the individuals on the other side would have better
things to do with their time than go after the particular project I'm
looking this information up for. The project, without giving away too many
details, involves making a certain graphical environment accessible to the
blind.
If not, then that is one sad state of affairs, don't you think?
Take care,
Sina

Yes, just ask them, and they'll probably be fine. Remember that the
author has all rights concerning the piece of software he wrote,
including providing you a special non-GPL licence for his software.
But on the original issue, no definite answer can be given, except in
trials, since it all depends on the thinking of people.

Indeed
Instead of a special license, they might just include an explicit exception
in there for sapi and directx perhaps.
Take care,
Sina

I believe both SAPI and DirectX are bundled into a form
that is redistributable by developers. However, greedy
vendor microsoft has been changing tactics lately so I'm
not sure how long that will continue. Afaik these two are
basically loadable libraries in binary only, the API is
published, the internals are proprietary. You don't even
really own the new vista, and it can only be installed on
one machine. Upgrade your hardware and pay greedy
vendor again ...
